Deadlift Question
« on: August 17, 2006, 12:16:57 AM »
Two questions about Deadlifts please:

Should I almost literally squirt sweat from my face when I do a set of deadlifts?  Like my face can be totally dry and by the fifth rep it will be almost totally wet,  I'm not exaggerating at all.  Is that ummm OK?

Also I think I could deadlift heavier/longer but my biggest problem is I feel like I can't breath when I'm holding all the weight.

Any tips?

I think you might simply be holding your breath for too long and the blood is swelling up in your face - thus making you sweat. Breathe in as you go down, and out as you go up.

For your second Q, where is the problem breathing? Does your heart hurt when you hold a breath?

Also, are you sure you're performing the exercise correctly?

1 - Yes, you are using your entire body and when you push yourself you will sweat.

2 - this is why you set the weight down between each rep instead of bouncing it off the floor. lift - exhale, set weight down for 1 second - inhale...repeat

Heavy compound exercise like the DL, squat, etc put greater demands on the body. In return producing  more  engery (combustion) & body heat. Sweating is different in most everyone when working out, including racial groups. Overweight people will tend to sweat the most.  Also depends on the workout environment and the clothing one wears. People in good shape will usually take a little longer to work up a good sweat. Normal sweating is healthy and is desired, adnormal sweating is not. What's normal for you may not be for the next guy.  Anxities can also cause unusually sweating. If by the 5th rep you are sweating like Old Faithfull that may be just your body type or something else.

If you are having troube catching your breath and sweating a lot, when extra stress is put upon your body through exercise (after a few reps) than something else could be the root cause. May want to check that out with a doctor just to be on the safe side. High blood pressure comes to mind, among other things. A lot of the PL'ers (heavier classes) and BB'ers have raised blood pressure even when not working out.

As for the DL it's self, might try a wider grip or if your gym has a Trap Bar than used that. A Trap Bar gives a more natural position/grip when lifting. Holding the arms, and supporting a heavy weight, in front of the body is not always suited for everyone. Good Luck.

Thanks people, I think maybe the problem is that I hold my breath and dont know it.  I will try setting the weight down for a second like Overload said.

Thanks again.

If a woman wants to avoid becoming manly, she needs to avoid male hormones.

Excersises has nothing to do with it.

Hope this heps.

yes, you should be sweating profusely by your maximal set, if you go super hard you will feel dizzy after you drop the weight on the floor :o Deadlifts are a full-body workout and should be included in ANYBODY's routine, male or female, weak or strong.

Sweating profusely like Matt Foley, motivational speaker, who lives in van down by the river.

I have a question about Deads. How far forward should your upper body go/how far down should you squat?

Well when I squat I try and go as low as possible, ass touching the floor almost when I can.  I think some say going below parallel is bad on your knees though.

^ I was referring to the hip/knee actions when deadlifting. I used to squat all the way down on deads, but watching Ronnie, he goes parallel at lowest, so it has me wondering.

But, I will try to help with your post about squats:

I'm no physiologist, but anyone who is please tell me if I'm right on this... The reason it could be bad on your knees is because your knees are primarily responsible for bringing the thigh up to make the leg a straight line, so the more ROM, the more it affects the knees. The more weight, the more bearing on the knee-joint, etc. Hope that info is true and I was able to help.

Excuse most of my posts, I'm a retard.  :P

I do know that the most pressure is on your knees when your at parallel though.  8)

I sit back and get my hips as low as possible and drive up with my heels...

ronnie does more of a romanian or stiff leg deadlift...

Yes, these are a main part of my routine----I love dead lifts--  I also sweat up a storm after a set...so I know I am getting a great workout!
