National Bodybuilding Championship - Bahrain
« on: September 24, 2006, 07:33:26 AM »
HASSAN Saleh clinched the plus 90-kgs title in the National Bodybuilding Championship which was held at the Gulf Air Club gym in Salmabad. The 41-year-old former national team veteran and Arab champion encountered stiff competition from top Bahraini bodybuilders Ahmed Al Aradi, Taleb Al Halal who came second and third respectively.

A total of 19 Bahraini bodybuilders took part in the one-day event which was organised for the third consecutive year and sponsored by Royal Majesty and Flex Sports Centre.

The entrants competed over four weight categories - under-70-kgs, under-80-kgs, under-90-kgs and above-90-kgs and the top three bodybuilders were honoured at the awarding ceremony.

In the under-70-kgs category, Nasrallah Al Musawi bagged the title. The 22-year-old Al Mousawi, who finished third in last year's event in the same category, came out on top with his main opponent Ebrahim Al Qallaf, 24, finishing second and Ali Al Khayyat third.

Abdulwahed Al Asfoor, 42, was crowned champion of the under-80-kgs event after a fierce battle with 32-year-old favourite and former national team bodybuilder Aziz Khonji and Ridha Yousef who took second and third places respectively.

In the under-90-kgs category, favourite Abbas Khodair lived up to expectations by claiming first position.

The 29-year-old Khodair, who made his first appearance in bodybuilding competitions in last year's event, won the under-80-kgs section but this year he gained 10 kgs more which forced him to register for this weight category.

Majeed Abdulhussain took second place and Khalil Ebrahim third.

The event was attended by sports clubs guests, including Al Najma club first vice-chairman Mohammed Ismail who honoured the winners.

Saudi Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association member Dr Bader Al Shebani, Royal Majesty owner Hamed Ali, Al Najma Club second vice-chairman Ali Ahmed, Bahrain TV sports channel head Nabeel Buhazza and other guests were also present.

The event was only open to Bahrainis who underwent weigh-in procedures at the Flex Sports Centre premises in Riffa 24 hours before the event.

Organising committee chairman Saleh Al Ammar said this year's event was a big success although the Bahrain national bodybuilding team members did not be take partbecause they are preparing for the Asian Games.

Al Ammar said the championship was officiated by top Bahraini judges, headed by veteran Ali Amini, Dr Abdulhadi Al Aali, Abdulla Ali, Hussain Al Haiki, Hussain Al Benayan and Hamza Ali.

Al Ammar said a total of 28 bodybuilders entered the championship but only 19 qualified for the competition as nine were unable to pass the secret judging tests. The bodybuilders were prepared for this event by coaches Ali Amini, Arafat Yaqoub and Al Ammar.

Al Ammar extended his appreciation to Royal Majesty for sponsoring this year's event and thanked Gulf Air Club for hosting the competition for the first time.

He also thanked Supreme Council for Youth and Sports vice-president and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa for their support the event.

We had a clash with our Local Federation.  And we didn’t like the way they were running things.  So we decided to make everything on our own.

Even the judging score sheets were done by me and had the sponsors logo.  Some of the judges were from the IFBB and some who actually judge the world Championship in the past years.  Some of them were retired BBers.  So overall we had different opinion which made it interesting and everyone got his fair share of call outs.

The committee ensured that the judges knew what they were doing and added up all the judges’ scores to come up with the final result.  We also had a meeting prior to the pre-judging to ensure we were all on the same page.

What qualifications as a Chairman of the Judging and Technical Committee are you or other members required to have to be on such a Committee?

What is the responsibility and purpose of the Committee?  How does one get on the committee?  How many on this committee?

Are you required to have any kind of certification, or courses in Bodybuilding or to have competed in the past to be on the committee?

Does such a committee select the judges or influence/review their scorings before the final decisions are made and announced?

Trying to get an understanding of the different organizations worldwide and how they conduct the shows.  Your answers would be helpful in accomplishing that goal and understanding the process in your region.

Thanks in advance.

TJ..

Doesn't look like you answered any of the above questions?  Especially if this is a new break away federation you're talking about, it would be helpful to understand what this new organization is.

Who was the local federation that you had a problem with?  the IFBB?
So a group of guys broke away from them and held a contest one day?

Our local federation is under the IFBB.  We had some internal issues with them about banning athletes from competing in BBing shows based on their personal opinions.  None of them broke any IFBB rule.

The federation wanted us to the show under their supervision and with their judges.  Which we didn’t like and we don’t like the way the judge.  Most of them are old people and think that Lee Haney is still Mr. O

So we decided to do it on our own.  And it turned out to be one of the best show … if not the best- ever organized in the region.  More than 1400 spectators attended.

The committee selected the judges and we acknowledge 5 judges out of 7 results.  (IFBB standers operation procedure)
The committee is there to calculate the final result of the judges and pass it to the MC to announce the final results.

The show was only for athletes form Bahrain, although we got a lot of calls from BBers from countries around that they wanted to do the show.

The show was broadcasted live on TV and has been repeated more than 6 times since

I will hold another 2 shows next year and will update you on that.

There are people on couches in the front row and other bodybuilders peeking behind the curtains while others are posing, i'm going to have to question 1, whether there were 1400 spectators, and 2, how well run the show was.  By the way, do you let women attend these shows?  I did not see any women in the audience.
