HASSAN Saleh clinched the plus 90-kgs title in the National Bodybuilding Championship which was held at the Gulf Air Club gym in Salmabad. The 41-year-old former national team veteran and Arab champion encountered stiff competition from top Bahraini bodybuilders Ahmed Al Aradi, Taleb Al Halal who came second and third respectively.
A total of 19 Bahraini bodybuilders took part in the one-day event which was organised for the third consecutive year and sponsored by Royal Majesty and Flex Sports Centre.
The entrants competed over four weight categories - under-70-kgs, under-80-kgs, under-90-kgs and above-90-kgs and the top three bodybuilders were honoured at the awarding ceremony.
In the under-70-kgs category, Nasrallah Al Musawi bagged the title. The 22-year-old Al Mousawi, who finished third in last year's event in the same category, came out on top with his main opponent Ebrahim Al Qallaf, 24, finishing second and Ali Al Khayyat third.
Abdulwahed Al Asfoor, 42, was crowned champion of the under-80-kgs event after a fierce battle with 32-year-old favourite and former national team bodybuilder Aziz Khonji and Ridha Yousef who took second and third places respectively.
In the under-90-kgs category, favourite Abbas Khodair lived up to expectations by claiming first position.
The 29-year-old Khodair, who made his first appearance in bodybuilding competitions in last year's event, won the under-80-kgs section but this year he gained 10 kgs more which forced him to register for this weight category.
Majeed Abdulhussain took second place and Khalil Ebrahim third.
The event was attended by sports clubs guests, including Al Najma club first vice-chairman Mohammed Ismail who honoured the winners.
Saudi Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Association member Dr Bader Al Shebani, Royal Majesty owner Hamed Ali, Al Najma Club second vice-chairman Ali Ahmed, Bahrain TV sports channel head Nabeel Buhazza and other guests were also present.
The event was only open to Bahrainis who underwent weigh-in procedures at the Flex Sports Centre premises in Riffa 24 hours before the event.
Organising committee chairman Saleh Al Ammar said this year's event was a big success although the Bahrain national bodybuilding team members did not be take partbecause they are preparing for the Asian Games.
Al Ammar said the championship was officiated by top Bahraini judges, headed by veteran
Ali Amini, Dr Abdulhadi Al Aali, Abdulla Ali, Hussain Al Haiki, Hussain Al Benayan and Hamza Ali.
Al Ammar said a total of 28 bodybuilders entered the championship but only 19 qualified for the competition as nine were unable to pass the secret judging tests. The bodybuilders were prepared for this event by coaches
Ali Amini, Arafat Yaqoub and Al Ammar.
Al Ammar extended his appreciation to Royal Majesty for sponsoring this year's event and thanked Gulf Air Club for hosting the competition for the first time.
He also thanked Supreme Council for Youth and Sports vice-president and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa for their support the event.
