Goudy - do you consider the photo above to reflect a full lockout?  That is as high as he went.

Well in this video from the front I`m not so sure he locked it up tuff decision :-\

Regardless - I feel the human machine CAN deadlift over a grand.
Oh yeah and more will come I`m sure.

When I looked at this video now it was some kind of lil problem with the grip in the right
hand.Well for just a moment it looked like that. But what can you expect with 1003 pounds
in your hands :o

He's insanely strong, but I wouldn't call that a legit deadlift. Compare it to this photo of Vince Anello locking out 725, and you will see that Bolton's lift is questionable at best.

Today was a good deadlift day for me: 430.  Next week I'll try for 460.  I find that too many warmup sets really sap my strength by the time I test my max, so I'll go straight from 315 to 460 next week with nothing in between.

Good lift Matt, nothing like the feel of deadlifts.  Just makes you feel strong.

Taking nothing away from Andy's TRULY phenomenal lift, you still wonder what old-time great deadlifters like Hermann Goerner and Bob Peoples could have done with all of the androgenic aids and support gear/equipment aids available to Andy Bolton?

Way back in the 1920's, Goerner deadlifted 850 lbs. in front of creditable witnesses (weighing about 250 lbs.), and Peoples did an official 725 lbs. at about a 185 lb. bwt. in the late '40's/early 50's.

It is generally acknowledged that androgenic drugs increase your lifts by approximately 1/3 (approx. 33%), and then what about the additional aid of the support gear (deadlift suit), special bar, etc. (?) another 50-100 lbs.?!

0f course, guys like Goerner and Peoples were totally drug-free and did their deadlifts with only the aid of a 4" wide single-ply lifting belt at the most.

In Goerner's case, if we added just the 33% to his 850 lb. lift (the added androgens) that would be an  increase to an 1130 lb deadlift.; not even considering the aid of any support gear, special bars, etc.

In the case of Bob Peoples, adding the 33% androgenic aid to his 725 lb. lift would increase it to 964 lbs.; and add at LEAST another 50 lbs. with the aid of the deadlift suit and you are up to 1014 lbs.(!!) (and Peoples weighed approx. ONLY 185 lbs.)

Food for thought!

The gym I used to train at threated to take away my membership if I did not use there deadlifting pads.  The pads were about 5 in thick and really turned it into an incomplete deadlift.  The worst part was the weights were the rubber coated kind and the floors were that composite type rubber shit.  The owner said I was going to ruin the foundation, ruin the foundation with my monstor dead lifts(average 300-500 range).  When he told me this I looked at him with bewilderment and simply stated, "Dude it's not like I grunted."

Good luck and good training on the DL's pushin...!!

I've run into similar problems at these "bed-wetting" health clubs!  You need to train at home and equip. a home gym!  The DL, of all lifts, needs just the crudest of equipment!  I've even trained outdoors in my backyard, supporting the bar on concrete blocks or just resting the plates on the concrete driveway or even the ground.

Goerner never did or claimed to have done 850 lbs.  I have a copy of his biography and the number for his 2 hands deadlift was in the 700s (don't recall the exact number - I can get it for you if you like).  Your point, however, is well taken.

Thanks Chris, I read the 850 lb. figure (at the best I can recall) in an article I read written on his life in an old Peary Rader Iron Man.  In ''googling" Goerner I pulled up the following very interesting link...

http://www.americanpowerliftevolution.net/HermannGoernerPage2.html

You are correct!  So it seems like a 793 lb. DL is Goerner's verifible figure on 10/29/20; which with an added approx. 33% for androgenic aids would be approx. 1054 lbs. (adjusted) without any support gear additional adjustment.

I knew Bob Peoples and he worked out occasionally at the old Frye Institute, where I trained in my youth, when he would pass through Chattanooga from his home in Elizabethton, TN.  At least I was right in the case of Bob Peoples...approx. 725 lbs. DL at a bwt. of 189 lbs. on 3/4/49.

By the way, did you see Dave Shaw's article in a recent issue of MILO where he was really debunking/criticizing the recent records of powerlifters vs. the comparable records of powerlifters of his era (70's to 80's) based on the tremendous improvement of the multi-ply support gear, etc., in recent years?

Excellent point Brian!  I actually saw Vince (a fantastic DLer!) lift at the National Powerlifting Championships in Dayton, OH ('84 I believe) along with John Gamble and Dave Waddington (first man to "officially" squat with 1000 lbs.).

As a matter of fact, I saw the judges turn Vince down on one of his 3 deadlift attempts because he failed to rotate his shoulders back (and there was plenty of crowd booing on this decision, which looked like a perfect lift otherwise)!

How much can a suit add to your max dead?

We didn`t have those when I did my masters world record but I had the suit in my last competitions around 2000 and it gave me almost 20kg from a 280kg lift to a 300kg and I had
a body weight of around 100kg.So you do the math. Those last competitions were minor ones in Spain.

What is the price of that suite? I want to buy one for me but I don't know prices and which ones are the best.
