You did what you were asked to do when you were in the army, and whatever ethical system and other identity attributes you had/prescribed to had to be exchanged to the system the army indoctrinates into the soldiers/workers when changing their identity into the most efficient one for reaching the armys objectives.

The psychological restructuring of individual identities in the army is great, if done enough, they can create killing machines with the ability to do things they previously would never even concider.

Yes! When returning to the regular society, you begin to assimilate new data to your character, you lose the "parental pressure" from the army hierarchy (thereby removing the need for your strongest army character traits), you see your old army ways in a new light which causes you pain, and the identity conflicts (values conflicts ++) that arise when leaving the armys system tailored for your indoctrinated "army character" causes additional pain.

Short term solution = take drugs or exogenous hormones to cover the new psychological problems with artificial means.
