dude planet fitness ain't buying ANY gyms. they don't have the money.

the owners of these gyms are changing over to the planet fitness franchise that is all.

This is absolutely correct and the gym owners are making a wayy better profit margin too by doing soo....I have to laugh at you guys sorry...You guys should all boycott Cory Everson gyms well your at, don't forget curves, and any other gym that has set rules and makes money by making these rules...Keep up the good work guys LoL...By the way, the Ironager Mike Katz owns a few Planet Fitness Locations too...You guys should all send him hate mail lol...

It's funny because I was championing the cardio/strength only business model (no aerobics, childcare etc) to some gym owners about 8 years ago in my country and they thought I was crazy...

They NEEDED the classes and childcare they thought... problem was they were hardly being used and were costing them a fortune in wages and rent to have. Most of those guys went broke btw once fitness first came in and they still had their huge overheads...

If you're in a market where people are tightwads like most planet fitness gyms are - check out the majority of their locations - then those people only deserve the basics the way planet fitness is going.

the result is though when you get that cheap practically everyone in town will join... some planet fitness gym's have 10,000 plus members.

A large group of the biggest guys in the area should go work out there and follow the rules, then when they try to kick you out for just being intimidating sue them?  :P

I have personally watched Planet Fitness Locations in Florida sign up 500 new members back to back to back months....These guys are hilarious boycotting Planet Fitness...I am praying non of these guys have ever been in the fitness industry as far as running a facility; they would realize that hardcore lifters only make up barely 10% of the total gym memberships....Planet Fitness has a business plan that works...The overhead is incredibily low and the memberships are cheap, also on average when a Planet Fitness opens they have over 3,000 memberships in less than 3 months depending on the location....Boycott it guys LoL, because Planet Fitness doesn't really want ya anyway...Its called business.....

Hunters Creek & Lake Mary are two in Florida I have personally seen the membership stats on and Hunters Creek actually did over 800 new members one month...It is amazing how many people they sign up....I have also seen the stats for the Daphne, AL - which averaged over 300 new members a month and Two Mobile, AL locations doing 400+ new members within their first 6 months of becoming Planet Fitness....

Pity they aren't in australia - and I can't afford to bring it here -because people here would eat it up...

only 8% of the pop are gyms members compared to your 15% and the average dues are $60-$80 per month.

the thing is many of these gyms charging $60 per month in rural areas are terrible!

Even a scaled down planet fitness with say 40 pieces of cardio, a 12 piece circuit and some dumbbells charging say $25 per month would KILL IT seriously...

Places like sydney and melbourne would be a different story due to the very high rents except for the outer suburbs where they would do very well...

Sounds like a very profitable franchising opportunity for anyone wishing to move to Australia...It wouldn't take much and there has not been a Planet Fitness yet that has closed down because of lack of business...I even seen a Planet Fitness in a ghetto area do really well...Who would have figured that lol....

dude the opportunities here are UNBELIEVABLE in certain markets.

The problem is that all gym owners here try to cater to every single segment of the population and wind up catering to nobody!

Curves has only just arrived and they are killing it also...

Jaggy, do you own stock in the company?  Sounds like it.  If you are admiring a good business plan, I can appreciate that but sounds like you really support them and their philosophies.

Do you workout regularly?  Where do you lift?  Would you be happy to lift regularly under all these restrictions?  Not being able to deadlift, having all dumbells over 70lbs removed, squat racks and leg presses and other freeweights taken away or minimized, alarms going off when certain people are "threatened" by others?

Planet fitness is a private company owned by 3 guys from NH.

Shaggy's point is that planet fitness isn't pretending to be anything it isn't... they are upfront about being softcore and they have the right to do whatever they want it is their business afterall.

Problems have obviously occurred when golds/worlds have converted to a planet and the old members have had trouble adjusting.

Personally, I think there are some great opportunities opening up in certain US markets for some smaller, hardcore gyms to open up and do okay because planet and others are getting rid of the 10% of members that are hardcore.

So long as they keep their costs way down -via used equipment, basic buildings etc- there is no reason a hardcore gym can't stay afloat- look at metroflex and the like.

The days of doing what you want in a big, commercial gym are over...

Yes I have been into bodybuilding for years...I was actually involved with Planet Fitness on few different occassions, but I no longer am...However, I do not work out there because Planet Fitness does in fact have set rules that are placed in several visable locations that I do not want to follow so I choose to workout at another facility...You guys should ask Mike Katz where he works out, for he doesn't work out at any of the Planet Fitness Locations he owns because he knows the rules and is making alot more money by following the Planet Fitness business plan rather than the World Gym plan...The only reason I have said many times that I am laughing at you guys is because no one is forcing to you to workout there and if you do choose to workout at Planet Fitness than you have to follow there rules just like any other privately owned club...Your not going to walk into a non-smoking shopping center and start smoking and expect to get away with it LoL...

Actually i'm surprised planet fitness doesn't restriction their members to 3 workouts a week... that'd probably make them even more money by getting rid of gymrats!

i think i have a great idea.

we gather about 10 or 15 of the bigger getbiggers and go into a planet fitness. one of the major ones. come in with buckets of chalk, thick-ass lifting belts, knee wraps, the works. then we start a nice big group deadlift-oriented workout. no holds barred, chalk all over the place, grunting, smacking each other around, all of the most obnoxious stuff possible. see what happens.

Yup its called business...Hate it or love it...The nice thing about this situation no one is making you be a part of the business...Amazingly...A bout 8 months ago myself and a few of my hardcore buddies got together and opened this hole in the wall balls to the wall gym to give the other hardcore guys somewhere to go to workout after everyone started to go to Planet Fitness around the area I am in now and guess what??? We were able to pay for the rent and utilities the first 2 months and than after the third month we had to pay out of own pockets to pay for the place to stay open because most of the guys were going back to Planet Fitness just to be around the ladies in the gym lol...Hardcore lifters huh...

Jaggy, thats right, you were a manager at a Planet Fitness, right?

I understand their right to make rules and freemarket to make $, but we, as people who are passionate about fitness, have a right to bitch and complain, spread the word of their restrictive policies (and stories of harassment of certain bigger members).....and boycott.

Unfortunately, there are not so many great options in certain areas.  A lot of the smaller gyms also relied on the middle of the road lifter to keep them afloat.  These Planet Fitness and 24 hr Fitness giants take a % of clientel common to both gyms because of price....but they take away necessary equipment and weights to build a physique....the point of a gym.

Of course, no one is forcing us to join....but they are monopolizing some markets and are becoming the dominant force in the industry.  Your gym experience is my exact point!

There's no reason good for them to be so restrictive.  I understand the value in capturing the beginner market, certainly, but a gym should be accessible to most people, not just beginners.  Also, not allowing deadlifts and rack pulls and heavy squatting discriminates against all athletes too, not just hardcore lifters!!!!
I hope it does open up a market for more serious gyms...but having a place that makes it reasonable for both crowds to lift shouldn't be so hard!

Yes you guys do have every right to have your opinions, educate other members, and boycott Planet Fitness...By the way, let me tell you guys this...After being involved with Planet Fitness in Mobile, AL I went to a sister location of theirs to work out I had never been to because it was the largest one in the area...Guess what happened when I started benching heavy and I was making a bit to much noise??? I was asked to leave by the GM that I was business acquaintances with...Was I angry?? Na, but it did take me by surprise...The point is if you are that angry about it than do something about that is actually constructive...Get some guys together, draw up a business plan and jump into the water of owning and or operating your own facility rather than just bitching about another successful company.....Sound like an idea???

mate they probably eventually will!

when their clubs are basically full they will search for ways of freeing up equipment and this is one way of getting rid of the girls that spend 90 min per day on their cardio.

watch this space i bet it happens! and from a business point of view it will be the correct decision...

(Thanks for modifying your reply by the way)

There is a good reason for them to be so restrictive...Its called a plan that has worked for over 10 years now and is exploding as of right now...You need to walk a mile in the shoes of someone trying to run a fitness facility and realize that barely no one stays committed to going to the gym...Not even 40% of the people that become members ever regularly use the facility...Now in a business perspective if your membership fees are soo inexpensive and the atmosphere is non-intimadating then people won't even bother canceling their memberships on a average time of two years and you just keep signing up more and more people that are doing the same thing...Think about it...Just take a one minute and think about it...This is business...Local business in many areas have gotten totally pissed about Wal-Mart coming to their area and have tried to boycott that also, but like I said hate it or love it that is business....
