Goat, that’s interesting.
I believe 220 – your age = your target heart rate to maintain for 45 min. to an hour (appx.) to best burn fat while maintaining muscle.
Is that about what you’re doing for cardio?
I presume you’re not staying in contest-shape the whole time either. Do you measure BF%
I’m not being cynical, just curious…
220-age is your theoretical maximum heart rate, your target should be 70-80% of that. An hour's a bit much... I usually run 30-45 minutes 4-5 days a week. (more if I'm trying to drop fat, less if I'm not). I use a recumbant exercise bike instead of running if it's raining or hot outside, or if I just don't feel like running. I don't "stay in contest shape", but I don't get fat either. I do get tested, and I'm never over 14% at the top of a strength building phase. I get as low as 8% at the end of a cut, and I can usually maintain that within a point or two. I know I give up some muscle by maintaining levels that low, but I have no interest in competing, just being relatively healthy and looking decent. I'll take being a 205# "swimmer" any day over being a 260# lard-ass who claims 15% but is closer to 25% and who has never seen his abs and probably has less muscle than I do under all that fat.
