Hopefully this will set the record straight.
Kevin Levrone had an $18Million Dollar Nike contract. Their one-month agreement was that Kevin would wear a Nike t-shirt to the Olympia Press Conference so that it would be seen on ESPN and major media outlets all over the globe. It was a one-shot deal aimed at giving Nike some free product placement on a scale that their Michael Jordan commercials could only have hoped to achieve. The deal was signed on October 1, 1996 and everything was going smoothly.
Nike sent Kevin a blue and orange Nike t-shirt and he tried it on a few times, but didn't want to risk wearing it during a 'hardcore baby' workout so he kept in his gym locker. Problem was that he failed to pay his gym dues and they repoed the gym locker, Nike shirt and all. Kevin tried to get the shirt back but it went for $18.31 on ebay and he figured that was just crazy. So he went to Foot Locker to get a similar shirt and found one with the same colors and the same fit. Sure, it was a Reebok shirt and all, but the Reebok upside-down swooshes looked pretty similar to the Nike logo so he figured no one would notice. He wore the blue and orange Reebok shirt to the press conference and did his best to cover up the logo.
All was going well until Shawn accidentally spilled his Evian bottle on Kevin's lap. Kevin jumped up and the camera zoomed in on him with his hands swiping the water off his groin and the Reebok logo there for the world to see. That night on ESPN Sportscenter, they showed the infamous "water spillage" controversy over and over and over again at 11pm, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 am, and each time showed the camera zooming in on the infamous Reebok stripes. Nike executives were furious, and while they succeeded in forcing ESPN to destroy the footage, the damage was already done. Reebok sales surpassed Nike for the first time in Q4 1996, and never looked back.
Nike, which had already sent Kevin the check put a 'Stop Payment' on it, but Kevin thought he had gotten away with it and deposited the check anyway. The day Kevin found out the 18M check had bounced was one of the saddest days in his life, only made sadder when his brother showed up to console him in a brand new blue and orange Nike shirt he had just purchased on ebay.
So now you guys know. Let's just let it rest now, okay?
