Great quality pics from the Ironman Isaac!

Hey tell me somethin?

As its well known that the Ironman is regarded as one of the premier shows IN TERMS of LIGHTING.

What makes their lighting superior to other shows, is it a trade secret & why do other shows struggle to duplicate or improve?

Is it the...

a.The actual lights?
b. The distance from the stage?
c. The angle the lights hit the stage?

Thanks. It's a combination of an illuminated backdrop that isn't cluttered with logos and variously sized banners as well as the lighting. The lighting is handled by IRONMAN's Michael Nevuex who does a tremendous job. It is a combination of various angles and number of lights. Not every venue has the ability to do the same lighting but it would be nice to see other venues with better lighting. It definitely provides some great shots of the competitors.

thanks for the reply Isaac.. Its now obvious to me that Mike Nevuex influence has been projected in the shows lighting. Mike is probably my fave BB photographer of all time. His influence on the Iroman mag in the 90's was awesome as his trademark backgrounds and clarity of shots made picking up an edition of the Ironman (back in the day) a must.

I think promotors part of their licencing of pro shows should consult with Mike prior to each competition to maybe set a standard across all comps
.. I recall the 06 Euro GP's, their backdrops were horrible and a real distraction to the competition - IMO.

Very good pics Issac.  At my show we didn't have banners.  We scanned hi res versions of each logo and sponsor and then between routines and breaks we would project them on the back wall.  We used a plain jet black curtain with micro holes in it with low backlight so it looked like a starry night.

Imagine if the Mr. O or the Arnold was in that light ?

I always thought that it was the best lighted show currently since the English Grand Prix in 1999

The lighting at the Ironman is the best. The pictures always come out there, as Michael Nevuex and John Bailik know what important lighting is, as they are both photographers. I did ask this question to JOhn as to why other shows dont have as good lighting, and the reply was that you need to concentrate more on the lighting in the front for the competitors, then the backdrop and set in the back.

They have a very good team there that runs things at the Ironman in setting things up. Every year, we are impressed. The stage is higher, the lighting is great, and they treat us right there.

Backstage, you have Ironman, Flex, Muscular Development, Bodybuilding.com, Getbig.com and many others are trying to be a cohesive, positive factor. It is great, nice feeling, even with everyone's differences.

great thread dude. This needs to be discussed more in bodybuilding. The lighting at most shows is abysmal and thus the need for competitors to paint themselves with orange and brown paint.

The lighting at the IRONMAN was  just great. Other shows and the especially the PDI should learn from this. It is really worth the investment. Makes the show much more enjoyable to watch. I also liked that they kept the stage free of clutter and advertisements.

When looking at the lighting at the British GP 99, it seems like the spotlights are placed right above, or slightly behind the competitors.

One thing is for certain: lightning could be much improved, building on past experiences and learning from good examples such as this show and the IRONMAN.

Thanks.. I think there should be some type of standard that is set for competitions these days and the promotors need to be made accountable.

See up until recently the IM was a $10k show yet there'd be no shortage of competitors ready to compete, the competitors know/knew that if they were in shape some great photos could be taken and used to promote  their careers.

There should be a creative consultant at the IFBB  that goes to the venue (particularly if its a new venue) to determine the quality lighting.. And the cost for this should be encompassed by the licencing fee the promotors pay the IFBB to run the show.

I think the backdrops should be lighter in color.  Sometimes the guys are so dark it is hard to see them.  Maybe it's just the pics

On the flipside to the Ironman lighting.. The Sacramento Pro Lighting left a bit to be desired.. I have heard so much about John Lindsay (the promotor extrodinare) that I was expecting to see better lighting...

You're really hung up on this lighting. Posting the same thing on various boards and various threads. Are you in the lighting business?

LOL.. c'mon Isaac..

I think lighting is an integral part of a quality show.. don't you?  Cheesy

I'm not in the lighting business...but I do think its a different subject away from what is normally discussed that doesn't get addressed as often as it should.
