I love listening to flag-waving Americans....

They seem to forget that America remains the only nation in world history to have used nuclear weapons against civilian populations... and they did it twice!

America also killed quite a sizeable chunk of it's own population (approx: 1m) with their atmospheric nuclear testing... and that's before you get to their disatrous foreign policy.

The German, Russians, Japanese were all working on the bomb. The American, British, Canadian alliance just happened to do it first. Many people don't realize this but by being bombed twice the Japananese were given a way to honorably submit. They knew the war was lost but their code of honor would not let them surrender till they were totally defeated. They would have had to endure carpet bombings of their cities and an invasion force made up of the Pacific theatre allies and beaten to a pulp before they would have surrendered. Millions more would have died if not for the two atomic bombs being dropped.

Guess you never heard of the secret felcility Japan had in Korea where they were doing their own research and development on nuclear weapons or the supposed test they did which was claimed to be witnessed by those stationed near the place. They would have gotten us if we hadn't gotten them first had it come down to it.

Many believe the Japanese spent the summer trying to surrender and we didn't like the terms. Also many believe the second nuke was entirely unncesessary, other than to let the Ruskies know they'd be next if they tried to hate on American growth/meddling worldwide from 1948 on...

They only had a nuclear pile bomb... (same with the Germans) it was a small runaway nuclear reactor style device and would only maybe take out 2 or 3 city blocks.

If anyone really had tested a proper nuclear weapon (Germans or Japanese) the Americans would have noticed.

I still reckon that at most, America was justified in maybe (just maybe) nuking the Japanese (or German) nuclear research facilities.

Using thermonuclear weapons against civilian populations is much less justifiable than say... hijacking planes to attack the country that betrayed you.

we intentionally didn't take out the much more advanced german rocket/weapons program.

we let them work, didn't bomb them, didn't try to stop it. WHY?

Cause after the war, the german scientists were allowed to miss those Nurembourg trials and they all moved to Houston, TX. They formed NASA. They had a choice and most realized life in USA as a well paid scientist was better than war torn germany. Look at the original NASA member list. All germans, right after WWII.

I don't know. With only 60 hours between blasts, it could have been they were trying to figure out what just happened to 100,000 people, and why everyone who arrived on the scene also died immediately.

Anyone with compassion for civilians would have given it more time between blasts. We intentionally took out civilians - we could have scortched the military district or taken out leadershp. Instead we went after women and kids (most of the men were at war). IMO we should have went after a military target, or detonated in an empty place.

I call that being smart. To the victors go the spoils. We couldn't let any top scientists get captured by the Russians. Any way all the scientists MADE SURE TO GET CAPTURED by the American forces. What does that tell you?
