Why do women read romance novels... is something missing?
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:20:18 AM »
Yesterday I was sitting at a cafe with a friend and we noticed a woman sitting alone at the next table reading a Harliquin romance.  She was hugely morbidly obese... and wore this absolutely repulsive dark brown eyeshadow, painted on like a clown.  The title of the book was very steamy...  :-\ We couldn't help but think that if she got rid of 100 pounds and lost the eyeshadow, she probably would be experiencing in real life, what she was only reading about.   :(

But then we got into a discussion about romance novels and how successful the genre is... millions of them sold every month, and we got to wondering if maybe it's because so many women are not satisfied with their romantic lives. All these novels are about being swept away by some strong, piratelike male.  :D

Do women desire romance much more than men do? I know I like it.  :-X

But then, how do you sustain it over time?

Deedee, I used to think the same thing... that women who read romance novels were missing something, but then I actually got to know quite a few in the romance novel industry -- publishers, authors, readers, etc., and discovered quite the opposite. They're not missing romance from their lives, it's merely entertainment on many levels. I found most to be much higher in intelligence than those who prefer movies (book readers often are) with very vivid imaginations that really come alive. I've read a few of them too, ...and some are actually very good. I was surprised at the number of men in the industry who write under female pen names. Real tough guys too, ...but when they pick up a pen... whoa!  ;D

I would respond to this, but it would take too long, and you already know the answer anyway.

Yes, I know the huge industry has some extremely intelligent people working in it. Actually Judi, I think the head offices for Harliquin are in your town. And remember reading that apparently there is a male gay couple living somewhere in the US who co-write romance for women and are hugely successful at it.

I know occasionally I like to pick up a steamy romance novel, and can get through it in an hour.  :D  But I wouldn't read one in public.  :P

Maybe it was just strange to see a morbidly huge woman opening reading about lust in a public place that made us take notice.

But... have read many times, that romance novels are women's porn. Guys just like to look at pictures... we like the whole experience of romance. I was wondering if that was true.

I gotta say Deedee, it is pretty nasty of you to be starting threads about me, and talking about me like this :-\

Ya know being around guys most of the time and yet training alot of women...I would have to say women seek out romance much more than men...Men could do without the romance and would just rather be in a relationship and seek one out due to being lonely more than looking for romance, but there are always those guys out there that are hopeless romantics....*On a side note: Not to sound like I am stereotyping any particular type of woman, but I have seen mostly overweight, unattractive women reading romance novels more than attractive, leaner women; just my observation.....

Ya.. Harlequin is here. They just launched a real man campaign in search of cover models because the modelling agencies are sending them so many skinny modelly types. Never personally read a Harlequin myself. I prefer the Avon & Black Lace labels myself.  :-[

The thing with the romance novels is that it's not all sugary sweet flowers and champagne. Far from it.
It's an adventure story most of the time. It's not so much the wham bamm thank you ma'am, as it is the whole process leading up to whatever transpires. Often, they "fade to black", ...unless it's a Black Lace novel, ...in which case it can't wait to pick up where all others 'fade to black'... and in some very graphic detail too.  :-X It's like a thinking woman's "Indian Jones"... make that "Indiana Jane"  :P

Sounds a little more like erotica than bland romance.  ;) Anne Rice has also written some good erotica.

I've always been partial to historical romance.  Kathleen Windsor's Forever Amber has to be the best ever written.

I used to read the Harlequin Romance novels. I loved them! I guess I got too busy with life, and had forgotten about them. I don't think I had anything missing in my life at that time, I just loved to read them. Guess I'm kinda addicted to the muscle mags now...

But then, how do you sustain it over time?

When you have the perfect match, it sustains itself. When you don't, then those people have to find ways to sustain it. If you look at the divorce rate and the number of failed or unfulfilling relationships, it obviously is not easy to sustain, however it may be even harder to find that match.

Very nice pic btw...

Debussey used to read Harlequin novels, because they gave some great insight that Debussey adopted into it's own game.

Debussey can thank Harlequin novels for a lot of poontang.

Debussey still has a notebook with strategies, patterns and shit from Debusseys own collection of them.

Gotta love it, read it, model it, and benefit from it.

You can learn a lot about womens desires by checking out these novels (there = a reason why they are #1 among the female population in America).

You can also learn a lot by reading Nancy Friday's books. My secret Garden = one of Debussey's most beloved books. Kinda helps you getting the best out of a woman.

Harlequin books tend to be more about adventure than steamy sex and getaways. My mother used to collect them. They are nothing like the thick novels, which tend to have three-ninesections of  sex in them.

Like one in the front, one in the middle and one at the end. Or 3 in the front, 3 in the middle and 3 towards the end.

I have no clue as to why this genre tends to sell. But I gather women want Romance, and guys buy the action novels (Tom Clancy).

Hmmmm. I'm reading a wonderful tale about a Master and his slave girl. Does that count as a romance novel?

I went to the Black Lace website.  Now I get why you like them.  :D

A girlfriend turned me on to them {no pun intended} We were discussing a romance novel written by a mutual friend, and I mentioned how annoyed I was when it really got going and then like some 30's movie... it would 'fade to black'. She laughed wickedly and sugggested I pick up a Black Lace novel. I had never heard of them before, and asked her what was so special about them. She just laughed and said check it out. So one day while down at 'World's Biggest Bookstore', I happen to see a Black Lace novel. I read the back cover, and it seemed an interesting enough plot, and since I was in a rush... without giving it much though I grabbed it.

A few days later, I sat down and proceeded to read it.  :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :o   :P

Needless to say... I've since picked up a few more titles... they can be a little addictive. I'd thought she was just joking when she told me they were graphic, ...I had NO IDEA just how explicit they were.        :P   :P   :P

I just wish there was some way to know in advance what kind of depravity could be found in there before you buy the book though. Some of the plot lines seem really good then there's something in there that is just a little too shocking if ya know what I mean.  :-X

Ya I much prefer the historical ones much more than the contemporary or futuristic ones.
For some reason I've always found the contemporary ones to be lacking somehow. The historical ones have the ability to paint much more vivid pictures and to engage the imagination & the senses much more than the contemporaries. Maybe it's because there aren't as many rules that have to be followed I suppose. They could paint pictures of life in 20 BC or 16th century France, or some remote Tahitian island any way they want. Although I know alot of historical authors will strive for technical accuracy. Personally, I think for many of them, the quest for technical accuracy is simply an excuse to take a tax deductible vacation traipsing around Europe visiting old castles, majestic countrysides, or other exotic locations. Who can blame them?  :D

As far I know about the old style romance novels, the formula was basically: Girl is engaged to staid, kind, but cold good guy.  Mysterious bad guy enters the picture and she can't help feeling overwhelmed by his rugged handsomeness and sexiness,  ;) although put off by his badboyness. Bunch of things happen, she ends up in some steamy kiss scene with the bad boy, saying "no, no" but doing "yes, yes."  More stuff happens, the good guy is exposed as a phony and the bad boy ends up being a romantic, amazing hero who wants to marry her and have 80 children.  ;D

The news ones seem to be more realistic.

What that the good girl falls for the badboy; badboy get her pregnant and leaves her; good girl files for child support from badboy; badboy is nowhere to be found; badboy ends up in jail due to back owed child support from 5 different women....Does that sound about as real as it gets??? LoL

Have you been reading romance novels lately?  :o

No, I meant the stories are more erotica rather than romance, where the woman does what she wants... at least I think so, I only pick them up every now and then and can through one in an hour, since I skim.  :)

But true to the formula... what you describe would never happen. It would be more like that's what it would "seem" to be, and the girl would be devastated, but by the end you find out it was the phony good guy who somehow set up the badboy and the badboy is really a rich, benevolent altruist who just wanted her to love him for himself.  :)

I should write this stuff.  :D
