SEA Games Federation Members To See Progress In Korat
By D. Arul Rajoo
BANGKOK, May 9 (Bernama) -- Members of the SEA Games Federation (SGF) will meet in Thailand's north-eastern city of Korat on June 4 and 5 to see the progress of preparations for the 24th SEA Games and decide on the appeal to include several sports, including bodybuilding, in the biennial sports meet for Southeast Asian countries.
SGF Council Member and President of the Thailand Badminton Association, Prof Charoen Wattanasin, said construction of stadiums, the games village and other facilities were going on according to schedule.
"We have no problem with the venues. All are being readied as planned. In fact, SGF members will be able to see the progress during the meeting next month," he said in an interview here.
Charoen said Thailand has allocated 1.462 billion baht (about RM152 million) to organise the Games from Dec 6 to 15, with the main venue in Korat and some events to be held in Bangkok and Pattaya.
But the highlight of next month's meeting will be Thailand's strong bid to include the controversial bodybuilding sport and waive Rule 36 of the SGF which disallows inclusion of new sports within 12 months of the Games' opening.
"In fact, bodybuilding was included initially but was dropped as the SGF council felt that it had been marred by bad judging in the past. This will be a controversial issue as we have to decide whether to follow the SEA Games ruling or make an exception," he said.Furthermore, Charoen said, in the recent Olympic Council of Asia meeting in Kuwait, the medical committee presented a report stating that out of 15 violations related to prohibitive drugs, nine were committed in bodybuilding, and this resulted in the exclusion of the sport from the next Asian Games. Thailand wants to have nine bodybuilding events, including two for women.
The 24th edition of the biennial games will carry the theme of "Spirit, Friendship and Celebration" as the host nation expects more than 6,000 athletes and officials from 11 Southeast Asian countries to take part.
Charoen said a total of 41 sports have been confirmed for the Games, with 440 gold medals at stake. The last SEA Games in Thailand was held in the northern city of Chiang Mai in 1995.
Korat, located about 260km northeast of Bangkok, was picked by the Thai Government as Bangkok, which hosted four of the five SEA Games held in Thailand since the event started in 1959, will host the 2007 World University Games in August.
The province has already started the construction of a US$77 million (about RM262 million) sports complex which includes two indoor stadiums with a capacity for 5,000 and 2,000 spectators, a 20,000-capacity outdoor stadium and a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool.
The Games' opening date was picked to commemorate the 80th birth anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch.
Charoen also said the SGF would discuss Laos' preparation to host its inaugural SEA Games in 2009.
He said that initially the land-locked country wanted to host 22 sports but was planning to add three more to coincide with the 25th edition of the Games.
