Most of the guys buying all the DVD's are queers or hardcore fans.  They're just too boring for a typical person to sit through.  Hours of guys being filmed lifting weights.   I once  slipped a DVD in to show my girlfriend bodybuilders live, eat, train, etc.   Five minutes into it she was prying the remote from my hand because she said it was too boring and she wanted to watch Oprah or something.   It's a tough sell.  RTB is significantly different and entertaining, I might try to get her to watch it.

It wasn't a tough sell between 2004-2006.

Bodybuilding DVDs will stop being produced very soon.  Sales have declined 80% thanks to Robert Cockrill (Pain86) and his other account "Tech9" ripping everything to the internet.  I have been pressing a lot of the producers to sue him, but Mitsuru doesn't seem to ever reply to my e-mails.

Honestly, I watched this DVD long ago when I got it, liked it, and just haven't reviewed it yet.  Hard to be motivated to review any DVDs these days because they don't sell at all almost.  I'm kind of surprised they are still being produced actually.

If the BB video genere is dying it's in a large part due to the fact that the fans of BB have gotten ripped off too many times. I've looked around at what's out there Matt, and it's deadly DEADLY boring. I tell people all the time, "RTB (and RTB2) is NOT a BB video. It's a documentary, which just HAPPENS to be about BB." I feel it necessary to make that distinction lest they think I am producing yet another 5 hour long UNEDITED workout video like some people do.

I've said this before on Getbig and I will say it here again in my own thread, if I had access to the "best of the best" in ANY endeavour; business, politics, medicine or sports, I would be embarrassed if my video was not riveting. BB video producers have gotten as lazy as porn producers.

Those are just my observations as a newcomer to the genre.

Yes, but just because the DVDs are poor quality doesn't mean that a producer deserves to have most of the viewed copies ripped by viewers.  For instance, if I were to leave a million dollars sitting in the passenger seat in my car I still have the right to expect it not to be stolen - it is still my property and stealing it is still theft.  But I understand your perspective and how it relates to utility; as long as the quality is poor, viewers will have an incentive to rip the product.  It is still a major issue in the industry right now and one which has affected me personally along the lines of over $10,000 this year if not more.  Although the lesson I've learned is that I should have more foresight in the future and not to heavily promote products that can be downloaded.

I'd like to clarify something. Re-reading my earlier post it sounds as if I am justifying the ripping of BB videos because of the poor quality. I never meant to imply that. What I was awkwardly trying to say is that the lack of quality and the pirating AMPLIFY each other. I wasn't disagreeing with Matt.

In other words, the crappier the BB videos are, the more people are inclined to download rather than buy because they've spent 30 bucks a pop in the past and been burnt too many times. The lower the prospects for sales, the less incentive there is for a video producer to spend time and money making a good product, and so on...

I guess what I'm trying to ask is how can I as a filmmaker battle this trend? Should I expect to making a different kind of video in the future? Maybe forget DVDs and produce my own downloadable entertainment?
