240 im going to have to respectfully disagree with you.

in my opinion his writing is equal to a freshman journalism major.....    meets the basic requirements; but nothing at all fantastic or unique about it.

MD, like FLEX, Like People, like USA Today and most other publications, is designed for an American reader at about the 8th grade reading level.

Some of the articles that delve into the tougher topics will use bigger words and require schema/background knowledge in higher level topics.  But the writing is designed so a 13 year old can comprehend it.

12th grade or college-level writing is hard to read, requiring concentration, sometimes a dictionary, and a fairly educated reader.  There are tests they do to measure the number of words/syllables per 100 words, taking into account how many sentences divide out, to ascertain the reading level. (I had the forumla when I taught reading but have long since forgotten it).

So if Ron harris writes at an 8th grade level - he is doing what his bosses (the American consumer) tell him to do.  I don't know the level of his writing.  But if it was 12th grade or college level, MD would sell less mags.  I'm sure, like most writers, he could write at a level way above the 8th.  But since that's what sells, that's what they'll write.

i didnt know that.

it is pathetic.  I agree.  But there are a few factors to consider.

"Consumable" publications like magazines and newspaper are designed to deliver a fair amount of info in predictable format with enough contextual clues and explanations so that the reader can comprehend the article by itself.  Designed to be skimmed or read.   Designed keeping in mind that 20% of Americans don't finish high school.  Hell, 0.67% of Americans still don't have indoor plumbing.  We're a lazy lot.  We need info presented quickly and easily.

Many journalistic purists hate this fact.  They are writers and love big words and long descriptive phrases.  However their consumer is statistically fat, lazy, slow, and not interested in learning - instead he/she is focused on passing the time and trying to "get ahead" by garnering something useful from this magazine.  But, to pay their mortgage, they will (in the muscle magazine case) continually rehash training and diet articles, rotating impressive words while following the formula of "leaving enough clues that Joe Dropout can understand it while dropping a deuce during the 15 minute break of his crappy job", hoping he'll read long enough to buy a supplement or two so their mag's ad revenue continues.

It's consumerism.  Part of consumerism is dumbing down these disposable publications so the greatest number of people will read it for the greatest number of minutes and return to buy it again.  In this world, you are only rewarded for being smarter than everyone else if you drive past the magazine racks and stop at the library instead.

I only wish that the magazines have some credebility and get rid of some supplement advertising.
Dumbing it down maybe a reason not to jepodise some supplements.

thread wasn't about conditioning.  Alex was raising a legitimate question--why is Harris lying about his weight.

Its prolly tough having a wife with a better physique than you.

Rons wife.

That's not fair!  It's only her arms, legs and back that are better... um, yeah.. that about covers it.  But look at it this way, they're very close in weight.

Hey guys! Glad to see you still think about me once in a while. Regarding my weight, here is my contest history. Hopefully you all realize that to compete in the NPC in the men's Heavyweight division, you need to weigh in excess of 198 1/4 pounds in shape. Therefore the claim that I am in the 170's, which I haven't been for well over 15 years, is inaccurate.

Hey Ron,

But what Alex is saying is, that there is no way in the condition that you are in now, and especially natural that u weight over 190lbs.

The last time I touched a steroid, and it was a 6-week cycle of 50 mg oral Winny a day plus 75 mg tren EOD, was Feb of 2006. I stopped the cycle a few days before the Arnold Classic, which I attended. All these photos were taken in the last month. I am currently preparing for the NPC Natural Colonial Cup and anticipate being at the very top of the LH class, 198 1/4. In all these shots I weigh between 200-203 pounds and have indeed been drug-free for over a year, as per the stipulations of NPC tested events. By no means do I claim to be a 'natural bodybuilder,' since I did use steroids.

And also, I am well aware that my arms are nothing special. I have been working them very hard for many years, but they have never responded as well as everything else. More pics, taken over the past month.

Now I'm confused, Squad. Anyway, my arms are about 17 1/4 now that I am in shape. Off-season the left is 18 1/4 and the right is 18. Oddly, even when I was on AAS they never got much bigger. Only my strong points like chest, shoulders, and quads kept growing even though I trained everything equally hard.

My arms haven't been 14 inches since I was about 16 years old, and I turn 38 next month. At this point, I would be more than happy to get them up to 19 off-season, 18 in shape.

u look really good in those pics Ron.

U just must be really "dense"  ;D

Nice of u to come on getbig for a change though!!!!

Its alot worse than it used to be i'll tell u that, now the shit talking has no value, everyone has been ousted as gimmick accounts. Its pretty sad here, there are guys who have gimmick accounts, for their gimmicks. Its rather pathetic.

I think what makes ur arms look really small is your lack of a brachialis. Ur arms really REALLY dissapear from the back. So that gives them less of that "rounded" look.

Thanks Flexington. BTW, 240 iis dead on when he says that the mags are targeted at a fairly unsophisticated average American male, 18-25, that probably doesn't read much higher than an 8-th grade level.
