I'd say that was the case for any 'nouveau riche' whether they be Black or White, athletes or musicians.
Look at some of Michael Vick's caucasian counterparts... you can take the girl out of Kenner,

Anyone watching Vick's mea culpa today saw a wealthy and privileged black man use the word "axe" in place of the word "ask".

What gives with even high profile and monied black people absolutely butchering the English language. You'd think sounding like a moron would be something they'd want to avoid.

Language is developed at a very early age.  I cannot tell you why so many Blacks say the word 'aks' instead of 'ask', but it's probably safe to say that Mr. Vick is not from a privileged background with highly-educated parents and friends.  I think that would have a lot more to do with a person's language skills than how much money or fame they currently enjoy. 

The assistant principal at my high school held multiple degrees, including a Ph.D., and was one of the most well-respected school administrators in our state and as clearly as the day is long, she would consistently say 'aks', something many of us were both puzzled and intrigued by.

Well, plz excuse my arrogance[] but I am black and personally I think my english is quite good, considering I started speaking it kind of late as a teenager. No matter what anyone's background may or may not be, improving one's language ability is always possible.

And working in the inner city I have seen lots of people who know to speak well, actually, it's kinda of a switch "off" that everybody uses. With your boys and friends and family you speak one way, using slang and local terminology, and at a professional setting using correct pronounciation. I have actually been more accustomed to white people using more curse words in their normal everyday talk (just like on here) than black people.

Yes and no. 

The reason you don't say 'aks' is because you weren't raised saying 'aks'.  A lot of these kids only heard 'aks' from the time they were born until the time they went to school and even then, they heard 'aks' nearly as often as they heard 'ask'.

Personally, I think one should at least know how to pronounce 'nuclear' before being allowed access to The Button.  The fact that the President is still talking about nook-ya-ler weapons (and families, lol) gives EVERYONE in the country a free pass for right now...but, we should all strive to do better.
