Anyone recall Big 'SuperKal'?

Beat Mentzer in 1976 Mr. Universe, came in 5th to Zane in the 1978 Mr. Olympia?

I think he did a few NABBA shows then hung 'em up.

He is now living in the Midwest and races bicycles.

I went to a small seminar he held back in 1979, and he sat down and addressed steroids.

He said: "Yes, I take steroids. And, if, along the road, I get sick, then so be it."

Well i'm into cycling and did some quick research.  Come to find out he's 54yrs old, races Cat 2 which is really high up there.  Cat 5 is a starter league and Cat 1 is Pro's so he's close to being in the Pro category which is extremely tough, especially at his ripe age.  Here are his placings per the federation;

Hope this helps...

Kal should have been the "next big thing", back in his day (for his age) his upper body was phenomenal. Good to see him healthy.

Of course I remember him, Olympia upper body, legs worse than mine!

Joe:

Do you remember the Jesus "Crucifix" pose he struck after placing 5th to Zane in the Olympia?

Of course I do, I think anyone who has kept up with or knows bodybuilding history can remember that classic pose. If I remember correctly, it caused some controversy, not only with his placing but the "crucifix" pose itself.

He actually 'threw down' with Weider right in his Woodland Hills offices over getting his photos back from him.

Kal ended up winning an undisclosed judgement from Joe, but was never again featured in IFBB/Weider pubs,

Unfortunately this was the fate of most of the best BBs mid-70s to mid-80s at least. Also unfortunately there was no viable contest alternative strong enough to impair the IFBB's or Weider's rep as the best show, despite the fact that their contests often excluded many of the top guys for a long period of time.

Boy, that was certainly the truth.

Talk about illicit racketeering!

Yes Joe, it was.

Unsure, but in the late 70's very early 80's Muscle Builder Power mags. More coverage was in Lurie's mags, due to his avorice to Joe, no doubt.
