You should be a bit freaked out if this is how you are having sex on a regular basis.
Here is something I wrote for another forum.
But I would know if I had anything...... - 06-15-2007, 07:41 PM

and I don't sleep with dirty people.
That statement makes me want to scream. Serendipity abounds.
This morning on the BBC news, there was an item about how teenagers in the UK have the highest incidence of sexually transmitted diseases in Europe, possibly even the in the Western World (I was not that awake).
I work in a pathology lab that does these tests, most of the people I work with, at least the younger ones, have had to take microbiology, which means you learn more than you want to know about STD (sexually transmitted diseases).
About a month ago, young man in our lab went to the GUMed clinic (genito-urinary medicine) where they do anonymous testing for STDs.
As he had few girlfriends, loads of peeps teased him and asked 'what is it dripping' and that fav 'you would know'.
Well you know what, with a lot of sexually transmitted diseases, you wouldn't know.
As I can't stand all the women's mags in the tea room, I always grab a BMJ (British Medical Journal) or NewScientist, Scientific American, Lancet or New England Journal of Medicine to read. We also have other journals, like one specifically for STDS and HIV in the corridor on the way to the tea room, so I have read a few of these.
Right now in the UK, 40-70% of people who have the HIV virus don't know they have it.
THis is what I read today.
And it is easier to catch HIV if you have genital herpes.
Now you would think that you would know if you had herpes, erm NO!!
From the BMJ, May 19th a few points of summary:
In the UK there has been a 15% increase in the number of diagnoses of first attack of genital herpes from 1995 to 2004.
In the US, and estimated 40-60 million are infected with HSV-2 with an incidence of 1-2 million infections and 600 000-800 000 clinical cases a year. So here we go:
Presentation of first episode of genital herpes
Often severe
multiple grouped vesicles that rupture easily leaving painful erosions and ulcers
In men, the lesions occur mainly on the prepuce (foreskin) and subprepuce areas of the penis
In women, the lesions occur on the vulva, vagina and cervix
They may be associated systemic symptoms such as fever and myalgia (muscle pain)
Healing of uncomplicated lesions takes two to four weeks
Severe complications are rare but can include autonomic neuropathy with urinary retention and aseptic meningitis
Summary:
Genital herpes is the leading cause of genital ulcer disease worldwide
Most patients with genital herpes have NO SYMPTOMS and shed virus intermittently in the genital tract Counselling of patients and their sexual partners is critical in the mangement of genital herpes (condom use is required)
Genital herpes caused by HSV-2 infection has been shown to double the risk of becoming infected with HIV through sexual transmission
So think about cold sores, which are a form of herpes. Most people are infected with the virus, but only about 30% of people get the cold sores.
I have had to learn WAY more than I have really wanted to about quite a few diseases.
