Not true. He was a cultural symbol, and his movie performances had an impact on hundreds of millions of people if not more. People identified with the characters he played, thus, he has a permanent place in most peoples memories which causes a reaction of grief. He, or his performances meant something to people + his media status automatically gives him coverage.
20 year old Baboo (with no schooling besides hunting for gobi and monkey in the forest) from the landly parts of Zimbawe dying from AIDS or ebola after raping an infested monkey don't have this place in peoples identities, thus, he won't get no special tears from people.
Debussey would feel much worse if Gary Busey or another role model Debussey identifies with or admires dies, than if Baboo dies.
