BCAA and protein powder
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:14:31 PM »
It seems like you should take both pre and post workout but I am hearing that you should not take them at the same time.  Any suggestions on how to time the two?  Should I take the BCAA 15 minutes before the protein pre and post workout?  I also take a carb powder post workout with my protein powder.  I am just trying trying to make sure I maximize my supplements.

Thanks

heres the deal...

most whey protein powders have very good amino acid profiles. the branched chain amino acids are included in them.

you dont need the bcaa's if you have whey protein in your system already. and you should be drinking some whey prior to your workouts anyway.

bcaa prior to workouts would be ineffective, well, better stated, they would be redundant.

its a good idea to take some bcaa's during your workout as they are primarily what gets degraded during your workout, and are also very potent pro-protein synthesis nutrients, especially at this time. you might try a small amount of that carb powder with the bcaa's in order to better send them into the muscle via the surge in insulin.

post workout is different...and largely depends on what youve eaten throughout the day leading up to your workout.   if you have a large amount of available amino's, then all you will need to do is replenish your essential amino acids. so a bcaa/eaa product would work very well post workout. you dont necessarily need another whey protein shake, because your body can only use so much protein for tissue repair at one time. the pre-workout whey is quite diffierent because it is not meant to be used for tissue repair but instead as a source of energy and as a potent incourager of protein synthesis by way of its bcaa content. primarily the branched chain amino acid leucine. whats most important post workout is that you give your body ample nutrients to function without resorting to its protein stores for energy. that means you need carbs....    and if your not worried about some extra fat storage, plenty of carbs

Stop spouting shit off like it's fucking gospel candizzle.

Most of the amino's in protein powders are still peptide bound. Freeform will still spike blood levels quicker and more efficiently than powders.

Take a handful pre during and post workout, you will get the full effect this way.

They are also useful for limiting catabolism when doing cardio.

Methyl Mike is correct.  Always ensure that your post workout BCAA supplements are in the free form state and in the chrystaline format (if available). They will absorb much quicker this way which is exactly what you're looking for after a workout.

A cool trick to speed the absorption rate of any free form amino in the chrystaline format is to open the capsules up in your mouth and hold them under your tongue.  This will allow some of the aminos to enter your bloodstream via the sublingual gland located on the underside of your tongue.  You can also 'swoosh' the aminos to the sides of your mouth (inner side of the cheeks) to enter the bloodstream via the buccal glands.  This is the way drugs like the steroid Cheque Drops are administered.  Cheque Drops are used extensively in the powerlifting community the day of a meet to increase DHT and overall aggression.  This drug turns you into one crusty motha!  Now, I will say that taking BCAAs in this manner tastes awful and doesn't make a huge difference in their effectiveness but for those looking for a slight edge, there it is!  Waxy Maize, BCAAs, Whey Protein Isolate (WPI-97 is the best but expensive), Creatine and a good supply vitamins & minerals is a good post-workout stack.  Of course, if you have extra money, you can add 10 g Glutamine & Glutamine Peptides, Beta Alanine and a few other goodies...

Drink Xtend or another BCAA product while training. Especially if you do weights and cardio, longer workouts.

Then whey and waxy maize right after training...
