Freakin lame.  Interested to think what Getbiggers think about this.

If my wife wanted to keep her last name, I probably would not have married her.

There are some deep problems there.  Like lack of confidence you're marriage will work?

Embarassment of you're husbands last name?
lack of confidence?, embarassment? I think its more b/c of the society that we live in promotes a strong independent female these days, not the first two but you never know but it does sound a little like insecurity to me. Why does it bother you that they dont?

If I am addressing a woman whose name happens to be:

Sally Johnson-Baker...

I say, "Hello, Ms. Baker..."

I will not say:

"Hello, Ms. Johnson-Baker..."

It just sounds stupid.
I think thats the way most people treat it

Agreed...listen...if it has more syllables than: "Arnold Schwarzenneger" (six syllables)...then, I simply ain't sayin' it! :)

If they're doing it because they don't want to take your last name, I'd say there's a problem.

However, there are legitimate legal reasons and name recognition resons.

For example, nobody knows Monica Brant ans Monica Peckham or Angelina Jolie as Angelina Pitt. So they keep their name for their fan base, etc.

They hyphenate it so they can legally use both names (Banking, Financial reasons, etc.). for example, they can go by Angelina Jolie for the movies and Angelina Pitt for adoption papers.

No insecurity on my part.

I treat women with respect no matter what they are called or known by. I think it is insecurity on their part to have to finagle with tradition.

Tradition gets further decimated in our society...soon noone will ever recall what their roles are/were.

Moral corrosion is a bigger problem than energy, economy or terrorists.

now that you mention it i could see how it might be insecurity on their part as well, however i would have to disagree on the moral corrosion how is a women wanting to keep her last name moral corrosion? "what their roles are" plz inform me of what men and womens roles are?

Only they both could still do their HC porn or whatever as Brant and Jolie. What does it matter to us what name stands in their credit card bill?

There is not a direct correlation of tradition and moral corrosion. They do seem to often go hand in hand...i.e. radical changes occurring

i can see how they might coincide but that doesnt mean one is related to the other, cultural changes could lead to moral changes but that doesnt mean its getting worse just different than what you know now. Im not trying to start an arguement im interested in why it bothers you in the first place? b/c it goes against tradition? i think you would be hard pressed to state that a women not taking the name of her husband has caused any moral decline in any society

I keep mine chained in the kitchen....just in case she forgets where she belongs.

The best thing is that you don't even have to buy her a watch, since there is a clock on the stove.

I'd let her keep her other name, as long as she agreed to anal at will. ;)  Seems fair enough.

nothing wrong with a woman that knows where she came from, before she met her husband. marrying a guy isnt the start of their life, champ.

i think u may have a lil dominance issue. rather than seeing ur wife as an object of love, u see her as a person to dominate and show ur power over, which she succumbs to - by taking ur last name. to say that ud not of married her if she hadnt shows that true love is nonexistant in ur relationship. names are only used so we can remember things faster than describing them, not as the 'clincher' as to whether u will spend the rest of ur life together.

im sure women being dominated by casual sex partners, but it can get very tiresome to deal with a husband 24/7 that has a dominance problem. often men dont know it until the woman files for divorce or they find her sleeping on the side.

Nice try at an ownage, but everyother post seems to be on my side.  As far as dominace, you're the one that seems to have a problem with dominace.  Asking a woman to adhere to tradition is far from any kind of domination.

Hyphenated names reek of hoity-doity pretentiousness, no excuses for em... "I'm important, thus you must expend the effort to remember and regurgitate those additional  syllables". ::) Make a choice, take one name and deal wid it.

I'd let her keep her other name, as long as she agreed to anal at will. ;)  .
Fair exchange.

I found it interesting that while Slick Willy was running for President, Hillary was known as Hillary Clinton.  Once Bill was elected she changed it back to Hillary Rodham Clinton.  She did the same thing when Bill ran for Gov.

The question is, why does she want to kep her original name?  If it's for a legitimate practical reason, fine, no problem.  If it's just to make some kind of bullshit feminist statement, that's not the kid of girl I'd marry.  If she gets a chip on her shoulder over the whole name thing, just imagine what she'd be like with more important things.
