Protein intakes are over-stated and overrated in an attempt to sell protein drinks, powders, supplements, etc. They are used by people who bodybuild. Most people assume they train like a bodybuilder because they pick up a weight, and it's simply not true. Unless you are competing on stage or training with a trainer who can teach you true intensity and routines, you probably don't justify the same intake as a natural bodybuilding athlete would require.

If you consume large amounts of protein, your body becomes less efficient at processing it and uses much of it for energy (look up damination and oxidation). If you consume small amounts of protein, your body becomes extremely efficient at using that protein and burns less for energy, so it's a tradeoff.

Studies show that either keeping calories the same and increasing the percentage of calories from protein, or increasing calories overall even if the increase comes from carbs, both can contribute to gaining muscle mass and improving protein turnover.

im not.    vegetables are fine. fruits are fine. the carbs in nuts are fine.  ....hell, as long as you are getting enough fats in your diet, low glycemic all natural carbs like oatmeal and potatoes are fine too.

 I would agree with you about the veggies and some fruit. I also think starchy foods are dangerous for certain people. Oatmeal is good stuff but potatoes aren't low GI. I'd go for pearl barley or even brown rice over potatoes.

question for you

so if I ate a balanced diet (whatever that means) for 4 meals and consumed around enough calories to be in a caloric deficit. Mix in weight training, cardio and standard supplements..given enough time I won't get ripped?

none of the protein will be converted into glucose, jackass!!    the only reason your body wouldn't convert protein into glucose is if it was energy deficient. in my case, my body has shit loads of energy. no point in wasting its time trying to perform an inefficient conversion of amino acids into glucose.....a form of energy which it isn't even utilizing anyways!

Listen here fool. Do you know why it's recommended to restrict proteins the first couple of days on cyclical ketogenic diet? It's because proteins convert to glucose and it will take longer to hit ketosis. Do you know why you can drink a big whey protein shake and shoot insulin and not go hypo? That's right.

And where did you get the idea that not eating carbs stops insulin from being produced? I guess diabetics can just stop eating carbs and they wont have to take their insulin anymore?

And another thing, carbs do NOT convert to bodyfat readily either!

If you ate like you claim you would be a 350lbs fat behemoth. If you eat like you claim I guarantee that your insulin is sky high.

You can tell he has no actual knowledge of the way things work. Every one of his 'dietary advice' posts sound like a hashed up mix of random sentences that he has memorized from FLEX and M&F. One of those misinformed souls who thinks that you'd lose 10 lbs of hard earned muscle if you skip a meal or even the 'post workout window' by 3 minutes ::)

Guys like him are the reason supplement companies make big bucks. Someone ought to point out to him that bodybuilding existed long before the invention of the ultra-predigested-super-duper-bioavailable-Amino-complex and that the human body doesn't eat itself away and turn a 250lb guy into a 110 lb guy if he forgets to take 6 gms of BCAA's before doing cardio on an empty stomach one morning ::)

I really don't get where some guys get off giving out all this advice and talk like they're a guru when they haven't accomplished jack shit.  I stay away from cadiddate for the most part, he gets enough shit from everyone else on this site but sometimes you have to realize that enough is enough and you sound like a damn fool.

Ketogenetic diets are useful in discarding excess fat but you still need a deficit, albeit a somewhat smaller one. Likewise having a surplus of calories irrespective of their source (fats included) will make you gain weight.

Let us remember that Canned Jizz Load is only 18. He's young yet.

He did say from PB, bacon, sausage, etc..so protein and fats with little carbs.

So, even with the following hypothetical situation.

500 g protein x 4 cal. per g. = 2,000 cal

300 g fat x 9 cal. per g. = 2,700 cal

100 g carb x 4 cal. per g. = 400 cal

TOTAL: 5,100 cal.  :-\
