Then honestly hire him (pay him!) to take your pictures................(hes a photogarpher...that's what he does for work)
again Lori this isn't directed at you.................but Bodybuilders/fitness/figure girls  always want things "Gratis"
like it's "owed them" just because they lift weights  lol
your nobody special neither am i ..............you want pictures of yourself

PAY THE MAN!
This photographer is not for hire unfortunately. I've never accepted a paying job and likely never will. Well, maybe if SI wanted to hire me for their swimsuit issue I'd take that job. But then I'd probably do that for free.

On the contrary, beginning in 2009, I will exclusively be paying models for my shoots. In the meantime, fitness models I work with for the books must accept an equal share of profits from sales.

As for "skewered fitness/figure models"... I've worked with well over 100 competitors and I still consider most of them are to be good friends. I love going to the expos because it's these few times of the year that I get the chance to catch up with and see most of them. I've found most everyone who comeptes in this industry to be helpful and good natured. Some on the very top are also the nicest and most gracious of them all. There are a few exceptions of course. But in general, no one escapes without spending a small fortune for the honor to compete. So if you aren't here for friendships, then you're not going to be very happy in the long (or short) run.

Typically, it's the companies that take advantage of the girls, not the photographers. Very few photographers I know of (in this industry) offer fame or fortune as an enticement to shoot. Most photoraphers who run a business in this industry pay their models (quite well too). Whereas the companies who "hire" models at the expos and such tend not to pay them, prefering to hire locals so they don't even have to pay travel or lodging expenses. Or so I'm told.

John you have been very lucky/fortunate in the people you have met in this industry,i have met some good people (as has Laura who counts Lori/Rip among her friends)but more so my share of "Users"..............people who want only to further there career (at any cost),It amazes me the "entitlement" some bodybuilding/fitness people have
lotta "delusional" people who think "they are the next BIG THING in BB or fitness/figure"
"gunna go pro...sign with muscle-tech.............be on the cover of flex magazine " (how about you win a national show first pal!)
then there is the "i have a shoot next week with musclemag" people we know
the " hold on mike i think i see bill wilmore ill be right back" ............people
etc etc etc.............(some "friends" so isolated and alone because of there obbesssion )
just have fun with it (be realistic!!)..............don't take food off your kids dinner plate for "supplements"
and realize there is always someone bigger/better than you!!

Very true... I've met my share of "fame-minded" competitors as well. I don't stay associated with them very long though. Too many other fine folks around to spend time with.

"Be realistic!!" is sage advice indeed.

in some of his shots the use of light / angle gives "me" a different feel

maybe I can say a depth to the photo ?   I'm not wordy ?

and some of his use of different poses / as well some that obliterate some portion in an interesting way to me

also some blatant straight up nice crotch shots  ;D

As I mentioned, I have my own collection of favorite photographers...
Take a peek at Floriane de Lassée. Her work amazes me. I wish she had a book published of her work. Last I checked, she didn't. Maybe I could learn how to do something like this in the next 30 years!
David Drebin is also terrific. His book recently came out and is wonderful. Though his models are clearly staged, it's a bit grittier than the usual.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the links, man that Floriane de Lassee pics were awesome.  I love night pictures.  The lighting in those pictures is out of this world.

D. Drebin had very Cool stuff too!

Mike you have a bitter vibe lately, care to discuss?  Not sure but something seems different about your demeanor.  Your comming off a bit passive/aggressive.

I'm giving out free hugs at the next expo. Anyone else who wants one can have one for the asking.

Btw, I'm not much into Maplethorpe.

Bodybuilders (Fitness/and Figure girls) ......ways of thinking are so "skewered"
there delusion of grandeur has them doing things they would not normally do!
(If i "pose" for this guy ...it will get me "exposure" ......then ill turn pro/get a supplement contract and be in all the magazines!!)

i see this all the time (they have no REAL friends because they use everybody for "Networking")
we go to shows with friends who are bodybuilders/fitness/figure girls .....and they spend the whole time "shmooozing" and trying to "make connections"  (lol we just wanted a nice night out with friends to see a show)
they would sell there own mother to make "connections"

very sad .............the whole industry is based on using people and "what can you do for me???"
my career???
sucks...............not very many "real people"

You're confusing me Mike. Are you talking about the bodybuilding/fitness industry, ...or the Film/TV industry?  ;D

I've just never been inspired from any photos I've ever seen of Mapplethorpe's. His lighting is usually flat and the way he poses his models (or choose to photograph them in their pose) is very awkward... Not artistic awkward. Just awkward. I don't know if it's the '80s leotards or the fact that there's nothing of interest to focus on, but he's never impressed me. He's among a handful of iconic photographers that I just don't get.

Now if you want to see some masters of human (and other) photography, check out Ritts and Bitesnich. The difference is astounding.
