How to get it hard?

thought that would get your attention.

Other than age and time, what are the secrets to getting muscle to look/be hard, even during the "off-season"?

You got my attention.  ;D

I would say that age (muscle maturity) and time training are the biggest ones.  Also strength... stronger muscles are denser and look harder, esp when you're lean.

I would imagine that water has alot to do with it...water in the muscles and water under the skin.
IMO It's hard to look hard during the off-season unless you stay pretty lean, and a good part of the reason for that is water retention.

So you don't think training style has much to do with it?  ie:  High reps, low weight or vice versa, strip sets/drop sets, higher frequency...????

Well since you precluded age and time.  A training program designed to build as much muscle as possible is the goal, specialy for the girls.  A moderate rep range 8-12 would be best for building muscle size.  A low carb diet would help you look hardest, replace the carbs with healthy fats and watch the sodium intake and you should firm up. To look hard as you described is almost all going to come from the way you eat, really pretty simple.

I do agree with Luv that alot of it has to do with diet (unfortunately), but in terms of building the muscle mass and increasing strength (I do think that stronger muscles look harder because they are denser)...I would go with a lower rep, higher weight kind of approach.  Strip sets, drop sets, and things like that will help to burn calories and get you leaner, but not so much build mass.

I guess that what you gotta do is over time, grow the muscle with a heavy, low rep kind of program, while eating clean enough not to get fat, and then maybe go with a higher rep approach with lots of drop sets, etc. to shed the excess fat and get the real hard look going.  Sounds like contest prep to me hahaha... ::)
