Arnold kicks Sly's butt in terms of box office return per movie.  Even though they both have about $1.6 billion in total box office returns for all their movies, Arnold's averages around $70 million per movie compared to Sly's $50 million per movie.  Doesn't mean that Arnold's movies are better, but, on average, a lot more people go to his movies than Stallone's.

Arnold
Lifetime Gross Total (23): $1,621,940,362
Average: $70,519,146
Opening Gross Average (23): $15,820,335 (Wide Releases Only)

Sly
Lifetime Gross Total (33): $1,639,909,420
Average: $49,694,225
Opening Gross Average (27): $11,699,125 (Wide Releases Only)

And Harrison Ford smokes Will Smith.  So what?

Debate is Schwarzenegger vs. Stallone.

My vote goes for sly. Arnold has very good movies, but i have to say that he doesn't have movies like Rambo or Rocky that you want to watch over and over again. Terminator is good once a year or so, but i can watch Rambo every week.

I don't think it is residuals but more that owns points in the films he does as does most major stars.  I think the residual formula is the same across the board for all SAG members.  It is based on what you personally earned for the film.  The more you make the more your residual checks will be.  But owning points in the movies will ultimately pay you more in the long run.  Most major actors will take a pay cut to own a piece of the film.  Like Nicholson and Batman.  His pay was not much at all but he made tens of million of dollars by having points in it.

on the back-end Sly makes much more money, they are all HIS movies, he is not just a paid actor in them like Arnold.

Intersesting debate, I have most of each of their films so I obviously like both of their movies enough to watch time and again. I would say that Stallone is a more well rounded and versatile actor by far than Arnold. He has made or been in more films that tug on your emotions wether it be anger, revenge or sadness and yes inspiration. Most of Arnold's where just for fun comic book style over the top action. Anytime Arnold tried to get serious in a movie it just did not come off well.

Arnie had more of his "terminator" personality in his movie. Fairly unemotional, relentless with some dry humor one liners thrown in. He presents the image of being unstoppable while stallone shows a lot of emotion in his movies. At the end of first blood he had a emotional breakdown and in the Rocky movies he showed a lot of self doubt and human flaws that led to the heart to heart convos with his wife. As someone mentioned Stallone tries to play more complex characters while Arnie sticks to a simple direct character.

Lets not forget the simmering rivalry both had off screen and on screen. Stallone shoots 20 guys and Arnie makes sure he tops stallones bodycount in his next movie. Arnie introduced Brigitte Nielsen to stallone - we know how that ended. Apparently Stallone helped the author of the book ARNOLD in an attempt to defame Arnold which backfired on him later. From what I've read Arnie tried to use the same psychological tricks he used during his competition on stallone. At one point Stallone had angrily said "why fight? There's enough room for both of us". Arnold would then backtrack and claim he was misquoted.

Overall they had some great movies in the 80's/90's.

Great????  Rambo 4 and Rocky 6 aren't great movies.  They are rehashed junk.

If Stallone is so creative, how come he keeps digging back into the well of Rambo and Rocky?  Those franchises are old and tired and should be retired.  Stallone needs to come up with something original.

Arnold's movies are pretty simplistic action movies, but at least, other than the Terminator movies, he didn't keep going back and doing sequel after sequel after sequel.

Rocky Balboa was an excellent film.

Granted, the series might have been padded a bit, but he tied the whole series together very beautifully.

Thought I'd refute your position with backup from Rottentomatoes.com.  I am surprised to find that Rocky Balboa had a 75% fresh rating from critics.  (see http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rocky_balboa/).  Guess it's a better film than I thought.

Still, Rambo 4 is a dog, with only 33% approval rating (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/john_rambo/).
