Getting closer to getting a puppy.  I want a Border Collie because I've heard they're one of the smartest, if not the smartest, dog breed.  Leaving the final decision to the kids, with my recommendation.   Smiley

Anyone own a Border Collie?  Any other recommendations on breeds?

Sounds like a great idea.

Maybe some of the dog's intelligence and compassion will rub off on you.

But, can you teach an old dog new tricks?

Cool dogs. Perfect dog for someone who wants a running companion. Super fit dogs. Perfect for a fit family looking for a dog that can handle playing all the time and going on big walks.

Thanks.  That would be us.

I've heard two different former owners say they had to give theirs up because the dogs were too energetic.

Anyone own a Border Collie?  Any other recommendations on breeds?

I have one pure bred Border Collie and one mutt that is 1/2 Border Collie, 1/2 Shepherd.

They are great dogs and extremely smart.  I think Border Collies are supposedly the smartest breed.

They need a lot of exercise and I mean A LOT.  Ours run w/my husband and also play frisbee frequently.  If dogs like these don't get exercise they can be destructive and very unhappy.  The breed is made to work so people can't expect just having a huge yard for them to run around in will make them happy....you have to run, play etc WITH them.

My relative had a border collie and the poor thing had a huge fenced in area and tons of extra acreage, but my relative is a sedentary man as was his former wife, and the dog didn't get much exercise.  His teeth were almost all broken from biting through a chain-link fence and he destroyed many things because he needed excercise.  He also couldn't be left alone and they had to get him a babysitter even so they could go to church!

So I guess I'm saying that unless you plan on doing a lot of running and playing w/the dog, don't get a border collie.

But if you do and you can give them what they need they are great!!!

Thanks Stella.  Great info.  Smiley  During the week we're at work and school, but late afternoons and weekends we could play quite a bit.  Is that good enough or do they need to be entertained during the day?

Since I don't work at a regular job I am home some during the day and a lot of time they are sleeping....keep in mind that they get a lot of exercise and maybe that's why they can sleep for hours at a time during the day.

But also when I get home from the gym sometimes they have slobber on their necks because they've been playing w/each other.

You should have a good sized fenced in yard imo for these types of dogs.  Absolutely no "chaining the dog in the yard" is acceptable for any dog.  It can fry their brains.

I should have video somewhere of them playing together on their own..I will try to locate it and see if knny will make a gif Smiley

Maybe you should get 2 so they can play w/each other  Cheesy

Do you know or have any opinion about electronic fences?

We're only supposed to get one puppy.  Then again, we were only supposed to get one kitten, but the humane society lady offered two for one, in front of my kids  Angry, who then gave me the sad face, so we took two home.   Undecided

I don't really know much about electronic fences but a guy we were talking to last night was saying he had one and it worked well.  He also said that he "tried it out" on himself which I appreciated.

Who says you're only supposed to get one puppy?  2 could keep each other company Grin

We are having a battle.  Daughter no. 1 thinks Border Collies are "ugly" and doesn't care how smart they are.  She wants a toy dog like a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian (?).  I might be a softie with them, but I will NOT have a sissy dog, since I'll be doing the walking and playing stuff too.  I may have to make a command decision.  Smiley  Stay tuned . . . .

Ugly?  lol!

I would assume anything you get she will love but maybe getting her something she really wants will ensure it will receive a lot of attention/care from her?

If it's going to be your dog though...get the dog you want Smiley

Although if you would have the smaller dog be an inside dog but not the border collie, I would suggest you get the smaller dog.

I go running four times a week and 9 times out of ten when I get chased by a mutt it's a collie! Angry

However, when they are not trying to take chunks out of my ankles, they seem like a nice breed to own.

Maybe they are just trying to "herd" you Grin

When the husband goes running the border collie will get to a cross-street/driveway before him and lie down in wait.  When he catches up that means she can cross and occasionally she'll nip (gently) at his legs until he makes it across.  It's all for his safety you know Smiley
