and by dumbells you mean Big Macs ?
I think it hits more of the back of the traps but is the difference that significant? Anyone tried them and what are your opinions?

I used to do them just because whenver I did them in the front the bar would always hit my junk and that was no fun!Now I do them to the front but on a smith machine, safer positioning for the boys!!!
just do em to the front.
The Hammer Strength shrug machine allows you to vary where you pull with the shrug and the BB is not hitting your ass when you do em reverse. Pretty flexible machine for doing different angle shrugs in.
