Funny how people forget he's half white, not all black
Funny how white people would only see him as black?
Both of you hit the nail on the head.
The election of Obama does not mean racism is dead. It is alive and well and will continue to be for years to come. The media may not be quick talk about this in any great detail, but technically, President Elect Obama is not “black”—he is biracial. Every “black” person in America understands that distinction very well as well as its implications.
By the way, since its founding, America was one of the few places in the New World that identified biracial people as black; in other countries in Central and South America it was possible to be a product of black & white miscegenation and not be considered "black."
Rather than defy it, the ascension of biracial (blacks) in American life is an affirmation of racial hierarchy and racism. Have you ever notice that some of the most celebrated “black” people in America do not look like the majority of African Americans. Frederick Douglass, Dorothy Dandridge, Vanessa Williams, Halle Berry, Colin Powell... Have you ever wondered why that is?
We don’t hear words like quadroon, octoroon, melungeon, griff, griffe, or griffane anymore (some of you probably have
never heard them) but those words were very common in the 19th century. The labels may be gone, but the psychology behind them is very evident in the ascension of Obama.
Don’t get me wrong, I celebrate Obama’s election; I voted for him and will support his presidency, but it is naïve to think this signals the end of racism for “black” people in America.
