Mature men in the audience??  “Admiring” the scantily clad muscle men on stage??  While they pose and flex for your benefit??  Hmm, that sounds awfully familiar!

I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.  Cheesy

Oh brother, I only watched halfway.....geez, if that's not jerk off material for gay men, I don't know what is.

Aaron Maddron seems like a nice enough guy, but why would a self respecting straight bodybuilder make a video like that?  I think this question gets to the core of professional bodybuilding.  Assuming we can agree that these usamuscle.com type videos are being produced for men, why pump and pump yourself up--just so you can show it off to other men (male schmoes)?  This is one of the reasons why I say bodybuilding is gay: because you (the huge male bodybuilder) are deliberately cultivating the attention of other men--and not in, what most people would consider, a wholesome way.  You sculpt yourself into a piece of meat (granted an attractive piece of meat) but a piece of meat nevertheless and you do this so that other men can 'feast' on you.

This dynamic is underscored by the fact that, most often, the male fans who are paying to come see you, paying to watch your videos, buy your photos, etc. are men who are themselves not in good shape--many do not work out at all!

Something more than ego, vanity, or a desire to make money is at work here.  I have my own theory about what is going on, but it would be interesting to see some interviews or read responses from pro bodybuilders reflecting on this question—particularly since videos like that Maddron one are so common in this sport.  Since I don't expect any actual pros to respond let's hear from you getbiggers...

As always, anyone who wishes to respond anonymously may send me a private message or email; my email address is in my getbig profile.

Gee Bay, you see gayness in everything. I suppose you think this hardcore wrestling pic looks gay too, huh? What a sick mind you've got.

Not everything.  But when I see a man shoot up with supplements in order to parade around in a thong (to music no less) while oiled up to the applause and appreciation of other men then, yes, I do see gayness.  And when these same bodybuilders make "lifestyle videos", engage in posing sessions (in private or public), sell "personal training sessions" to "clients" who do not even workout, or work as escorts on the side then, yes, I do see gayness.  I have posted images (and video) that represent all this.  You are welcome to do the same.

If you really believe I have tunnel vision, show this entire thread to your mom, dad, brother, sister, girlfriend, or boyfriend (or anyone at random) and ask them what they think.  But be warned: they may think very differently of you after you do so.  Roll Eyes

Well I was joking about the wrestling shot! But in all honesty, I think classifying certain imagery as gay or not depends a lot on your reference point. My father started me working out when I was 10 years old (I'm 45 now). He had stacks of all the muscle magazines and I never once had any gay thoughts looking at them. If a person isn't gay, those ideas don't generally cross their mind. For example, the Lee Haney photo you have of him in the streets of New York posing in the jeans. I remember that shot from 1984. I don't see anything gay about it.    Now, if I were a gay man, maybe I'd see it in a different light. And yes, obviously the guys that pose in those little clubs for the gay men and the gay for pay are all a reality of the sport. But there were a lot of young guys such as myself that read those magazines growing up who were inspired by the imagery and saw something powerful and heroic, and didn't envision having sex with these guys. Yes, the magazines don't want to alienate their gay audience, but their core target market has been generally straight, young males who they want to peddle their supplements to. I have been to the Mr. Olympia over 9 times since 1977, personally know Joe Weider and many of the bodybuilding hierarchy. Are there quite a few gays in the audience? Sure, but there's far more straight people.

At 10 years old, you were probably too clueless to realize what happens behind the glossy photos.  Even many adults today, aren’t subtle enough to connect the dots in some rather pregnant images.  Just because you don’t recognize what is happening in a given photo doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Gordiano sums it up best.

I hear ya. For the longest time, I had no idea. There were signs, odds things. I have nothing against gays.....my issue is with this whole shit industry as a whole. It's starts with the lying magazines, then it goes to the supplement companies, and then to the competitor's themselves. It's a huge bag of shit. Everyone within it, just winks their eye at each other, and pretend nothing is going on.

You've got the competitors prostituting themselves for drugs, money, and who know what else (drug abusers, and not just anabolics, mind you). You've got crooked judges, fucking and abusing the competitors. You've got the Snake Oil salesmen, who use the huge drug abusers to sell their shit products (all the while, we're being told product X is responsible for their gains and low bf levels). The magazines who seem to always forget to mention that drugs are the BIGGEST ingredient in the bbing cocktail. Then you've got the Feds themselves, the best man in the pageant doesn't always win.

Again, for a while, I was blind to all this. I didn't believe it at first.....but now I know better. It's funny to me how in denial people can be.

That Haney picture (like the Dorian picture) is another example of the (not so) coded images in pro bodybuilding.  When that pic was posted here a couple years ago several members slammed it as being way too gay, but many clueless people had no idea what they were talking about.  Again, not everyone is equally perceptive.  So be it.  I have every reason to believe that the people who slammed that Haney photo were straight—but they were not stupid and they got the message of that photo loud and clear.

The question I posed earlier stands: why would a self respecting straight bodybuilder make a video like the one above?  And why do you think those videos are so common in this sport?  You’re not 10 years old anymore; do you really believe the answer to my question depends on your frame of reference?

If you wish to remain in a denial bubble that is your choice, but you shouldn't expect the rest of us to play along--especially when many of us know what your BB heroes are doing when they are not on stage: private posing, gay porn, etc.  If you limit yourself to magazines, you will not appreciate the irony of this photo.

Believe me, I know all about the Bruce Pattersons, the Chris Duffys, the Bob Birdsongs of the bodybuilding world. I know basically every aspect of the sport..how many drugs are used, G4p. I'm hardly Naive. All I'm saying is that when I look at a creative, artistic bodybuilding photo, I don't, neither do the majority of true bodybuilding fans who appreciate a symmetrical, scuplted, perfectly proportioned physique, see something gay about it. I'm talking about the photographic image and what it means to me and others like me. I can admire a Bob Paris photo and be inspired by it and not dwell on the reality that he's gay. Do you get what I'm saying? However, if I see a suggestive photo of a scantily clad woman, I may get sexual thoughts. That's what I mean by point of reference.

Of course I get what your saying.  Now get what I’m saying: many of the images/videos I’ve been talking about are inherently gay—no matter what perspective one is coming from.  This is underscored by the fact that many people—straight and gay—have been taken aback by how obviously gay some of these images are.

One does not have to be sexually interested in these images to see that they are crafted to be titillating to a schmoe.  I can readily see that many of the T&A pictures of women used in film, TV, and publishing are used to titillate straight guys; you should be able to see the same thing in all these bodybuilding photos and videos ostensibly produced to “inspire” the viewer.  Any guy who can sit through more than a couple seconds of these videos (never mind buying them) is probably looking for "inspiration" of a different sort.  Speaking of which… here’s another one…

I always laugh when guys look at pix like the ones below and say “I don’t see anything gay about it” because, in effect, what you are really saying is that you are not very bright.  A picture does not have to consist of two guys having sex in order for it to be gay.

Many (most) of the editors, writers, photographers, and stylists (people who set up and manage these photo shoots) are gay. This is not conjecture on my part; several of them are publicly out on gay message boards.  Who do you think they are styling and framing these photos for? Women?  Um, no.  They know who their audience is, and they know the kinds of images that generate publicity and profits.  Bodybuilding is funded by male schmoes—many of them gay, bi, or closeted.

Learning how to weight train is something everyone can legitimately be interested in, but let’s be honest, you can learn all there is to know in a couple months (a week or two if you are serious).  Weight training for yourself is also a legitimate undertaking, but spending money to attend show after show, collecting years worth of magazines, and a library of muscle videos crosses into the gay zone.  I’m willing to bet that by the time you have made your way to getbig you already know how to train biceps, abs, legs, chest, etc.  So why would you continue to spend money on this stuff?

If you honestly think ogling heavily muscled men in thongs over and over for years on end (as so many bb fans do) is an interest of heterosexual men you are dim indeed.  As I have said in other posts connecting-the-dots is not something everyone can do.  So be it.

There are plenty of heterosexual men and women who will look at these Wolf pix and espy the gay aesthetic.  (The original Herb Ritts photo that inspired all the Wolf copycat pics is below; and yes, Ritts was a gay photographer).
