I would actually dispute the "revolutionary aspect" - in many poorer cultures and modern day hunter gatherer societies the women are attracted to the men with the highest levels of bodyfat as that is actually the best indicator of health and being able to provide any progeny with a plentiful supply of food. In terms of human history the obesity you mention was simply not an issue throughout most of man's time on earth. In fact the main issue was the opposite : starvation and the resultant death from it. We did not have the kind of lifestyle that facilitated obesity and these weight related 'maladies' that are a totally modern phenomenon. The fascination with abdominals is much more something of the last few thousand years (if you go by Greco-Roman art). In terms of evolution, that's nothing. Humans have spent most their time in a state of nature and sexual selection then was the inverse of what it has become since we have had access to an abundance of - ie too much - food.

Shawn Ray and Lee Priest eat tons of carbs and now that they are older, they can't don't know what abs are in the off season(Ray's offseason has been the last 5 years)...Bottom line is these two guys are fucking weak human beings when it comes to the food they put in their mouths...
