- they at least try to be a democracy in the ass end of the world

- they keep the rags in check

- everyone would bitch much more if Iran had the nukes

I have great respect for the jewish people, very educated and intelligent humans, done many contributions to sciences, literature and music, but I always thought that the cleverer gives in. The US has tried to impose democracy upon afghanistan and it didn't work out because in order  to have a democracy one first has to have enlightened poeple, and the educational system in many arab countries like iran, iraq, afghanistan has suffered severe damage because of the indoctrinations of the muslim faith and sharia. Let's not forget that those arab countries were once leaders in sciences and the numerical system you use nowadays is an arab one... these people just need the seperation of powers and the introduction of humanistic ideals, and that doesn't happen in 10 or 20 years, it takes a long time till the people adapt these ideas and develop a rational and non religiuos thinking style. Besides that, I don't think that Democracy is a good system at all, it's better than the others though, like churchill once said. But still, living under a wise and benvolent sheik or king is still better than living in a country of dumbasses who elect presidents on feelings rather than facts...

Europe was once in the same condition as these arabic countries, and nobody came to rescue us from the crazy inquisitions and restrictions the church has made... we had plenty of time to put humanistic ideas into action. Now we're rushing into the middle east and expecting these people to change their minds instantly...

great Post lumberjack! the distinct irony here is that it was the islamic culture that pulled Europe out of it's dark ages and gave birth to it's renaissance after savage barbaric Europeans destroyed islam, and then started learning from their repository of knowledge. Let's hope history doesn't have to repeat itself in order to bring Islamic countries into the 21^st century.
