Yes, it's quite odd.

I mean we aren't taking about more sponsors, more money or better promotion of the sport. They all take a lot of time and effort.

Banning thongs = take 2 minutes at the next meeting and costs nothing. Why not do it?!

He doesn't wanna be accused of focusing on gay matters, you see. If he's this homophobic/homoparanoid as we've seen in this thread, I think just for him to mention the word "thong" in an athlete meeting would make him blush really bad.

You could argue that catering for fans who actually have some interesting in gauging competitors' conditioning is good for the sport

Actually...you just made my argument. You're exactly right...it was OTHER factors that led to the boom...none having to do with the size of trunks (which were the same as today)
