Steele: GOP Welcomes Pro-Choice Moderates

Sunday, May 17, 2009 4:42 PM

The chairman of the Republican Party says the GOP is open to supporting pro-abortion rights candidates.

Appearing Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," the head of the Republican National Committee responded to a question from moderator David Gregeory about the viability of a GOP politician who isn't strictly anti-abortion.

"We've had wonderful pro, pro-choice candidates," Steele said. "[Former] Governor Christie Todd Whitman [of New Jersey], for example, was a very successful Republican governor. ...

"I look forward to working to build a strong pro-life coalition within the Democratic Party since that's -- this is the direction the president wants to go."

Good, the GOP cannot limit itself to far right conservatives if the party wants to have any success.  They must be more inclusive.

he wants Pro-Choice candidates in the party, yet he criticizes Notre Dame for giving the President an honorary degree, granted he says he didn't have an issue with the President speaking there, still he's trying to appeal to those moderates.  Basically saying you're good enough to be in our party, but not good enough to receive an honorary degree.  Walking a fine line here:

That assumes all people who are pro life are far right conservatives.  Not the case.  That said, both parties actually need to have a bigger tent.

I hear a lot of people call McCain a liberal, but I don't look at him that way.  He caved on the stimulus, but aside from that he said all the right things:  reduce the size of government, cut spending, lower taxes, etc.

This presents the Q.

Can the Repub party include moderates?

The Dem party invites them in, and they have 60 Senate seats and an Obama win as a result.

Some in the R party want to let them in.  Like Ridge and Crist.  others, like Cheney and you, think that it's better to have only 21% of the nation and keep your club exclusive.

At this point, it won't be long (if we're not there already) before the moderate repubs outnumber the far-right republicans.

Then what?

The Dems have people under their tent who are moderate dems, and they have people under their tent who are liberal pieces of crap.

They don't try to kick out the moderates.  The repubs do.

The democrats invite them in?Please name the pro life presidential candidates. In fact ,name the pro life democratic congressmen and senators and compare it to the pro choice republicans .Its not even close. In fact,in the last presidential campaign republicans had Rudy running, pro choice.Name the pro life democrat.

Democrats NEVER cave, they point fingers and say "you need to be more like us",but never do they become more conservative.
