This is hogwash. That is your own definition. It is true, however, that liberal means something different in the U.S. We also have to separate liberal economic ideas from social ideas. Liberal economic ideas definitely share certain common threads with socialism (and some elements of marxism) in that they push for a larger government with more control over the distribution of goods and services, more taxation, more gov programs & regulation, and more trust in a central government to make decisions for the people, and financially punishing the upper middle and upper class citizens.
