Church music & field hollers>Church Music & The Soul Stirrers/The Pilgrim Travelers etc...> Sam Cooke, Ray Charles (while on the Blues front guys like James Brown were copying Sam, as well as wanting to be Charles Brown) > Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Rufus & Carla Thomas > later day soul like Isaac Hayes & Superfly period Mayfield > to disco based music such as Spinners, Earth Wind & Fire...> to Luther Vandross and others that followed.

Just giving that as one example, but R&B can definitely be argued as spawning soul music, or vice versa. IMO, the difference is really negligible.
