Milk addiction
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:51:48 PM »
I"m addicted to skim milk.  We're talking over half a quart per day.  How much is this hurting my efforts to lean out?  Protein is helping but I'm concerned about the sugar (lactose).

If you say so....pasteruization destroys most all benefits from milk.

Then so does cooking any foods containing protein!  Pasteruization is just flash heat. Better not cook anything!

I've been considering switching to 'organic' milk. No residues of antibiotics, fertilizers, or gh in the product

hmm, conflicting info on milk as always!

for me, i use non fat organic milk in my protein shakes, since i cannot stand just using water, also to up the calories. as far as leaning out, don't know if this is bad or good. i usually drink 2 protein shakes with milk a day. also speaking of dairy i eat about 1 cup of cottage cheese right before bed since this is supposed to be a slow acting protein that feeds the body throughout the night?

now, i'm wondering if i'm drinking and eating too much dairy daily? not to mentioned whole eggs every morning!

Flash pasteurization is one type of method used, but there are several types that break down milk significantly.

1. High Temperature Short Time Treatment. Milk is pasteurized at 161 F for 15 seconds.

2. Low Temperature Long Time Treatment. Milk is pasteurized at 145 F for 30 minutes.

3. Flash Pasteurization. This type of pasteurization, which involves high temperature for 3 to 15 seconds followed by cooling and packaging, is used for drink boxes and other liquids that can be stored for long periods of time without refrigeration.

4. Steam Pasteurization. Pressurized steam is used to kill E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria in beef carcasses. Exposure of the beef to steam results in a surface temperature of about 200 F.

5.Irradiation Pasteurization. Exposure to gamma rays can prevent the growth of some foodborne microbes in foods such as meats, spices, and produce.

6. Ultrapasteurization. Heating milk or cream to 280 F for 2 seconds can extend the refrigerated shelf life of milk from 60 to 90 days.

7. Ultra-High Temperature Pasteurization. Heating milk to 280 to 302 F for 1 or 2 seconds followed by packaging in airtight containers allows storage
