Beggining to work out
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:28:12 AM »
Hey guys, I just joined the Getbig Forums, and I'm interested in, well, getting big. I have a fairly decent physical condition (as in, I can run for a while and don't usually feel exhausted). I don't have cash for a personal trainer or gym (I had in the winter, but the lack of motivation made me fail). What I need is some basic tips on how to start. What exercises should I do? How often should I work out? Do I definitely need gym equipment to get big, or is it possible to do it with basic exercises such as squats and pushups? Do I need to buy any kind of protein supplements? How often should I work on my cardio?

Thanks for your time

My best advice as far as exercising for strength.. Focus on back, leg, and core strength.  Everything else comes after and these are the biggest muscle groups and foundations for a strong body.

IMO bodyweight stuff is good but you need some progressive resistance to build decent size. Maybe invest in some resistance bands until you can afford a gym membership and look around for cheap benches and adjustable db's. Pushups, chins from a doorway, dips( use two chairs for chest) or for triceps, hindu squats, pike pushups are all good bodyweight exercises for the time being. There are a lot of good bodyweight routines on youtube, but try to get your hand on some freeweights eventually. Personal trainers IMO, are a waste of money.

As far as protein powder, it has its place but i like to rely on whole food chicken, beef eggs etc.. but it's good on the run and post workout. Cardio depending on bf should be done anywhere from 3-6 times a week. At least 3 to keep the heart in good condition. I really think you need to join a gym or get some cheap stuff for home though.

And get a pair of dumbells, 35lb should be fine.  If you're creative this is the cheapest and most effective gym equipment you can buy.

Haha somehow I knew someone one joke about my username, but I use that username on a whole bunch of stuff so w/e. I can't afford to pay a gym right now, but I will in a couple of months I just wanna know what I can do now, that doesn't require any equipment, to help me be in a better condition when I get to a gym.

Alright so, I should go shopping for adjustable dumbbells, work on progressive resistance, work on back, leg and core strength. I'll start googling around to see how I can do the exercises mass 04 suggested. I figured I should jog/bike every morning to get a good cardio. I'll take a look on protein shakes and see what's up. I'll work on this stuff until September probably, when I'll get access to my college's gym.

Thanks for the help guys

you need to contact king kamali and ask for some puma's, a rag for your head, and the holy grail of iron supremecy "plazmosis"!!!!

after this you should gain 4 pounds of lean mass a day without even working out.

you can get a good physique with bodyweight exercises, but you're going to eventually reach the point where it is not enough to satisfy your muscles. Try to get your hands on a gym membership/equipment!

LP Steamers in Federal Hill has XL's at $5 per crab.  I'm not a crabby but I'll be up there tomorrow so I can ask.  Last I heard a decent number out of the Bay this year.

I'm going for six tomorrow.  Any more and I'm gonna pop. :D

Hopefully that’ll keep the bushel price down a bit.
I’ve already spent as little as $50 and as much as $100+ ea.
(My Dad once went to a place between Baltimore & OC - they lined a third of the basket with fvcking newspaper! Pricks.)

We’ve been going to Crisfield the last few years, but that’s so far to drive for us.
Some of my relatives are heading to Ocean City in August.
I told them I’ll give them money to bring me back 1 bushel steamed and a dz. softies.

I can't find prices anywhere. We usually just call a day or two before going down because you know they change frequently.
I just wanted to get some idea of the harvest this year.

Thanks.

The best thing you can do to start is spend a few days reading all the posts in this forum.  There are a lot of experienced guys here who have been in the "game" a while and can help you.  Be humble, and realize that no matter how big or bad you may get someday, you can always learn something from someone else.

As a general rule, you can build a powerful, big-ass physique using just a handful of basic "compound" exercises.  Benching (flat dumbbell benching is best IMO), powercleans, deadlifts, squats, etc.

A couple thoughts for after you get the basics down...  Don't "overthink" your lifting or try to get too "scientific". What I mean is, don't bother with doing fucktons of isolation exercises or worry about doing an exact percentage of your max weight for a given set (unless you're prepping for a powerlifting meet).  A lot of beginners make that mistake, and they never get past stage one.  Just go to the gym, lift until you feel like you're going to die, and don't leave the gym until you feel like that.  Go home and eat, eat, eat, sleep like a bear in the winter, then get up and do it again.  Make sure your technique is always good, but above all make sure the passion is there.  The mind-body connection is pretty powerful, and you'll be amazed how big you can get if you really want it.  Don't worry about whether you are an "ectomorph" bla bla or any of that bullshit.  That stuff distracts you from your goal and puts limitations on you that may or may not really be there.

Good luck.

man you can do pretty good with bodyweight pushups, pullups, dips and pistol squats, using a variety of angles on the pushups along with different hand positions, pullups and different hand positions, dips, and squats pistol squats could be good...or just take an old backpack put books in it and magazines till it weighs however much you are going for then just strap it on your shoulders while doing whatever move it is.....
