An Edmonton bodybuilder who turned into a crack cocaine addict was put on probation yesterday for attacking two people at a country bar with a baseball bat.

Ironically, it was Corey Euchuk, a former competitive muscleman, who ended up in the hospital after a group of people with the pair he attacked ended up subduing him.

"They ended the battle," said defence lawyer David Paull during the provincial court sentencing hearing on a charge of assault with a weapon.

Court heard Euchuk, 32, had been with his brother at the Wild West Saloon, 12912 50 St., on Oct. 7, 2006, and was high on crack cocaine.

A group of people in the bar were talking amongst themselves and Euchuk thought they were speaking to him and "took offence" to something he heard, said Paull.

Some yelling went back and forth and Euchuk's brother got involved and then the bodybuilder "jumped into the fray" armed with a baseball bat, said Paull.

The victims of the attack, Aaron Harapchuk and Jennifer McNalley, suffered some minor contusions.

Paull told court Euchuk was suffering from a serious drug problem at the time, but he is doing much better now and has been working for the same company for a year.

"He seems to have turned the corner," said Paull.

Judge Michael Allen ruled jail was not needed and gave Euchuk a suspended sentence with 12 months probation.

As part of his conditions, Euchuk must take treatment and counselling as directed for any psychological needs, substance abuse issues and anger management.

He was also forbidden from drinking booze or using drugs and ordered to submit a DNA sample for the national DNA databank in Ottawa.

In 2003, Euchuk placed third in the senior men's light-heavyweight division at the Northern Alberta Bodybuilding Championship.

According to a pre-sentence report, Euchuk claims he went through $85,000 on drugs in a six-month period and has also lost his bodybuilder physique.Euchuk also blames the loss of his former common-law wife and their son on his drug use.

On a website called dontdatehimgirl.com, Euchuk's former spouse, Terri Hancock, called him an abusive, cheating crackhead and a deadbeat dad.

Once a bodybuiler, always a bodybuilder, it would seem.
