Tibia and ankle pain when walking/ running any idea wtf???
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:58:43 PM »
So I've had this problem for years where if i walk for anything over ten minutes on the treadmill or try running even a lap at a track I get these incredible pumps/ cramps along my shin...i believe it's called the tibia....and also down around the ankle in the muscles that allow you to move your foot back and forth.  It gets so severe that i can barely move my damn foot so i'll have to stop and massage it and then can go on for a couple more minutes.  As I kinda let myself go a bit, I'm trying to do cardio and would like to do interval sprints outside but it seems the only thing i'm ok on is the elliptical.  Does anyone know what causes this?  Is there a name for it?  Some type of solution?

Any input would be appreciated

Sounds like shin splints. Maybe stress fractures  ???

How are your shoes?
Do you warm up?
Do you stretch?

Shoes are good....happens in all pairs I have.  When I try do sprints I warmup and stretch, otherwise in the gym the treadmill is my warmup walking at about 2.8 for ten minutes then switch to the elliptical for 20-30.  Do shin splints affect the muscles down around the ankle and interfere with foot flexion?

I do have pretty large calves and have always wonder if this is caused by some sort of muscle imbalance, but what the hell do you train the tibia muscle with?

well, i looked up shin splints on web md and the shin pain sounds like it, but there is no mention of having pain down in the muscles aroun the ankle.  maybe there's a couple of things happening here.  thanks for the response

Yeh...I also thought shin splints. Also, your Achilles' tendon sounds like it needs rest. IANAD, so see a proper specialist. Good luck!
Almost always, yes.
