just looking at those last two photos of Arnold and Cutler, just shows how much the sport has gone backwards. Arnolds look is much better.

Arnold's photo is in b&w up close with a lot of sharpness and flattering lighting. Jay is not exactly known to be mr. aesthetics and he is offseason there, shot from a bad angle and bloated like a pig from the drugs of today.

If you wanna make a statement like that you can at least do it with a more fair comparison.

True, the small delts and legs look is more aesthetic, but a lot of those guys had massively underdeveloped delts considering what we now know is possible. Hang on ND says without delts you can't be aesthetic, well arnie's delts disappeared in a number of poses, but he was definitely aesthetic, or rather had a pleasing aesthetic appearance.

Jays thighs make Arnold's look very skinny. Jays shoulders are naturally much wider too. Jay is like 3-4 inches shorter than Arnold but Jays arms are nearly 2 inches bigger.

Arnold was good. But he would have been crushed by the top 5 at the Olympia if he competed. Todays pros have tremendous thighs and backs. Arnold was deficient there.

Even Arnolds best pose, the side chest pose, he was top heavy. Jays Arms, Thighs, traps, and delts would simply overshadow Arnolds dominant pecs.

So looking at the whole body....the pose goes to Cutler.

Cant compare.

How would Jay have looked in the 70's?

How would Arnold have looked today?

Who knows...

 ::)

what makes you think that Arnold didn;t have access to the drugs of today back then? of course he had, and everything was 100% legit, yet he looks like shit comapared to tha pros today...yes his chest and biceps would be very competitive but thats all he had!

NO delts, already wide waist from the front (just knew how to suck it in), so and so back, balerina legs and a retarded face to match these, lol.

there you have your "Arnie". lol  :D

Put Jay and/or the top five Olympia contenders onstage in Arnold's era, and they would all be crushed too. They'd all be marked down for having too much mass, not enough detail and holding water, not knowing how to pose, or holding a vacuum.
Like the above poster says, it's all apples and oranges.

I think Jay has an ugly physique, but if he was on stage at Arnold's time, he would destroy anything that came near the stage.  It doesn't really work in reverse, when comparing the eras.

Doesn't work when you put Arnold in today's era either!
That is the point. ;)

The general consensus is that a pleasing physique is eye candy to a girl and the look men strive for. Arnold had this look. Jay does NOT.

Sure it does, if you throw out all assumptions (better drug use, etc...) and just base it on the physique, which is what you basically did by saying Jay, as he looks now, would lose in the Arnold era.

Under that criteria, Cutler destroys the 70s.

But, yes, comparing the eras is mostly an exercise in futility due to the array of variables.

hmm. lets see, in 35 years since we saw peak arnold cutler has added significant extra weight to his midsection, thighs and glutes, wow!
he has managed however inferior detail overall, less vascularity and is totally void of lower back detail. his christmas tree development is nowhere to be seenand no prominent spinal erectors either. Arnolds snaked out like two cables! Jays back muscularity seems to stop half way down in the rear double biceps. He should have this and then some!
Arnold had a bigger frame that didnt need oversized delts for width not that his were small by a long shot. he also had a much thicker chest, bigger rib cage and small waist perhaps gentically wide(ish) from the front but overall tiny. His muscle tie ins were superior and his physique flowed from top to bottom.
At peak he also didnt have weak thighs, they were large, plenty big and deeply etched. ok he didnt have hamstrings sliced to bits but no one did back then, not much progression when his back is nowhere near as defined.
even stood next to each other with arnold in a snug fitting suit you can tell if Arnold had his peak physique and size cutler would not look particularly big next to him atall.
