Damn, that would be an impressive pic of your little hands holding two 45lb plates together.

How long can you hold them?

Better yet, can you hold them together off the ground? :D

Haha I know the true test is to hold 2 45lb plates together with their smooth sides out, but the gym I train at only has rubber plates with grooves on both sides. I can't hold 2 45s for very long though and only do it once in a while. I mostly do the barbell holds.

Some gym's have the thicker and not as wide 45's, I think Ivanko makes them, they're stubbier looking but half the width of a standard 45

I trains forearms by themselves every week for a good hour or so and do a fair bit of gripwork, which makes a huge difference to your size and strength.

I don't use the gripper, but load about 3 - 3.5 plates on one side of an Olympic bar (with maybe a plate or so on the other side) sitting on the pins of a power rack at about 4" or so below where your hands would be, if you let them hang naturally when you're standing. Then grab the bar on the outside of the side with more plates with one hand and keep holding to failure, which will take around 30 secs or so. Alternate with the other hand.

You can work on improving both the time and the weight you can hold. Do this at the beginning of your forearm workout when your arms aren't fatigued, for 3 sets of 30 sec holds, before doing other exercises like reverse barbell curls, hammer curls and such. You should notice some changes over time. You can also try pinch gripping 2 plates together.

one hour training your forearms!!!.. if it works good for you it's ok but for me this is definitely overtraining and boring.. i train them after biceps in 5 minutes and they look fine..

When I competed, I used grippers all the time and heavy dumbell wrists curls with 125's and I would hang from the chinup bar for as long as I could with a 100 lb. dumbell hanging from a dip belt

Haha I love volume training and take a good 3 - 4 mins off between sets to catch up with other people in the gym fully recover and lift the same weight I did for the first set, which is why it takes around an hour. I end up doing 6 exercises, 2 sets each and triple drops on most of them.

Hey better watch out.  What if your mommy comes in and sees you playing with yourself while you are looking at photos of bodybuilders.  How you told her yet.  you have outed yourself on here plenty of times.

I hate the gyms with the thin plates...you put 4 plates on the bar and it looks like nothing

You have succeeded my large friend.

That being said...grip strength is for weenies.

Hey a lot of people have had their grip training assist them in other lifts. Oddly enough it can help your bench to a small degree.

Plus it's fun.  ;D

The gold standard of thick plates was the old Yorks. They ran around 2" thick at the rims. The best plate gripping I've heard of is Wade Gillingham, who can pinch 3 35lbs plates on a good day. On the original question, I've found thick grip barbell/dumbbell work to transfer the best to general gripping and support strength. Stick with 2- 2 1/2" thick bars, thicker severly limits your poundages.

Pinch and hub style lifting is more specific I find and should be practiced alone.

some interesting feats of grip strength (from the Dino Files):

Herman Goerner - 1 hand deadlift 602 lbs
Herman Goerner - pinch grip 111 lbs to dead hang position
Doug Hepburn - tear an auto license plate in half
John Marx - tear two decks of cards in half
Charles Vansittart - tear a tennis ball in half, tear 3 decks of cards in half
Adrian Schmidt - one arm chin holding on a chain with just his thumb and forefinger
Mac Batchelor - bend a beer bottle cap with only thumb and forefinger, with a dime inside the cap
Hans Steyer - lifted 582 lbs off the ground with just his middle finger hooked through a plain iron ring

all drug free

I remember back in the 90's when Dorian Yates was still big he was asked to try to close the #3 gripper at an Arnold Expo. He couldn't do it.
