Possibly because the skinny guys were less intimidating, plus less competition for them. Women do not know how to compete for men, whereas competition is bred into men. Plus women and attention go together like fish and water. Dweebs will pay more attention to women than a dude who is handsome and takes care of himself, they know that this type of man can get any woman he wants.

IMO a lot of women are also attracted to guys who seem mysterious and don't show clear affection for them right away. Hot girls are used to the attention all the time. When they meet a good looking guy who is friendly to them, but does not have the "I want to fuck you" look on his face, they often get interested in such a guy.
