one of the best all around for his era builds in terms of shape,conditioning ,he ushered in what is still judged to this day a look needed to be in for contest stage,from that pic alone bigger traps as was stated would have thrown off his overall shoulder look which even though he was 5'9 190 or so ,he had good delts and a wide look for his structure.def a top physique,not a ton of muscle but what was there was quality and that mattered in his era,today well all the guys from 202 to open carry more muscle than zane but still he was conditioned as good or better than some guys today.

anyone know what kind of routine he followed? volume or HIT like mentzer?

this is the best pic i have ever seen of zane, who normally doesnt do much to impress.

He was a Mr. O before HIT started coming into vogue. Dude is part of the OG Arnold generation. Beat Arnold in '69.

Not many people know this, but Zane never lifted any weights while he competed.

He did swim 8 miles a day, though - his only training.

Zane looks superb in that photo. Not many ever look that good. He was bigger than people think. Frank went for a look and he achieved that and won three Mr Olympia titles against very good competitors. That is how you are supposed to stand 'relaxed' and not with arms out to the side that almost everyone else does and looks ridiculous.

Can't be. It's pre-mustache which he had in PI where he was around 45 yrs. Mid late 30s at the most.

I use to love IronAge. Been there since '03. It's gotten a bit too stuffy for my since Shawn turn the board over. I gotten booted after Joe Meeko passed away. His death really got to me as he made such a strong impression on me. He was just such a good and decent guy. He's one of the few that inspires you to want to be a better person. This place tends to bring out the worse in me. But at least it's not boring
