R.I.P. Gene Kiniski:
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:26:57 PM »
SLAM! Sports is reporting that former NWA and AWA World Heavyweight Champion Gene Kiniski has passed away at the age of 81 after a long battle against cancer.
The article notes that Kiniski made sure the article writer wrote the following when reporting his inevitable death: "When you spent a buck to see Kiniski, you got a ten dollar value."

Years ago when Gene was in the mid-atlantic territory, he lived near my parents....way before I was born, but my brothers used to play with his son, Kelly.  Said Gene was a really good guy and quiet.  George and Sandy Scott also lived nearby.

RIP.....

Refresh my memory – Sandy was George’s son?
How did George snatch the position as McMahon’s 2nd-in-command?

They were brothers, as far as I know.

I'm not sure about the 2nd in command deal.  They both began booking in the mid-atlantic territory in the 70's, after their in-ring careers wound down.

Long before Pat Patterson, George Scott was Vince’s right hand man.

I’m not sure at what point Patterson took over – or even if there was anyone before him – but Scott was there for at least the inaugural WrestleMania.

Here’s another bit of trivia for you…

Vince actually appointed Bobby Heenan right under Scott for a brief period after Bobby suggested some ideas that went over big on WWF programming.

However, George would never give “The Brain” anything to do & then complained to Vince that Bobby wasn’t doing anything.
It didn’t sound like Vince was upset, but he did ask Heenan about it.
Bobby simply said that he didn’t know what to be doing because nobody gave him any official tasks.
Vince asked him if he’d be happier on the road in his original role, and Bobby eagerly agreed.

Man, the backstage politics would annoy the hell out of me, if I was around it.....always hated that type of garbage.

Yeah, but shit like that goes on – to some degree - in every job environment.

I once worked in an office with many extremely petty-minded coworkers.
During that time, someone bought me a book titled "Jerks At Work."
I never read it, but I did contemplate taking it in and leaving it on the table in the meeting room.

You are right, it happens everywhere.  I guess what makes wrestling feel different is that its kinda like two actors trying to gain leverage with the director of a movie by snitching, etc... if that makes sense.

Add to that, that Shiavone was “nobody.”
He didn’t book, write, promote, wrestle, or manage.
He was a commentating puppet – and a lousy one at that.

The only thing he did do was kiss ass – especially when Russo came in.
I’ve never heard one good thing said about Tony.

Tony & Heenan were doing voice-overs in production. I forget whose match they were calling, but one guy threw a drop kick that missed by a good 18 inches, and his opponent began to fall/sell before realizing the guy totally missed.

Heenan – being the veteran announcer – said something like, “You know, Tony – a lot of guys don’t have that kind of resilience to duck out of the way of a clothesline.”
Bobby was trying to cover up by making a botch appear more like some kind of highly skilled reactionary tactic.

Tony (the senior ‘whatever the fukk he was’) yelled, “Cut!”
He turned to Bobby and said, “Don’t call attention to it. Don’t even mention it at all. Just ignore it.”

So, that match aired on Turner TV, and fans invariably saw a wrestler get knocked down by telekinesis.
But that was Tony’s idea of good announcing.

How are the Braves doing, Tony?
