Really?  What dirt did Bush's people make up on McCain?

Bush supposedly ran some phone survey in the batleground SC state - asking "would it bother you if you found out mccain had fathered an illigitimate african-american baby?"  Something along those lines.  Mccain had been campaigning in the state with a young cambodian girl his family was adopting.

Rove denied it, but hundreds of people in battleground districts all claimed they had received the same called.   It's called a "whisper campaign".... tough to prove (who really tape records political messages to their house".  but Bush's was pretty widely criticized even years later for the tactic.

Sounds like tabloid material.

I'm surprised this is the first you've heard of it.  It was pretty widely reported 10 years ago when it happened.

Maybe it didn't register with me because it sounds like tabloid material.

WIKI reports it as well.  it happened.  nothing tabloid about it.

During the 2000 Republican presidential primary, Senator John McCain was the target of a whisper campaign implying that he had fathered a black child out of wedlock. (McCain's adopted daughter is a dark-skinned child from Bangladesh). Voters in South Carolina were reportedly asked, "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew that he fathered an illegitimate black child?". McCain would later lose the South Carolina primary, and the nomination, to George W. Bush.

In addition, on the week of the nomination vote, dozens of radio stations were called on the same day asking talk show hosts what they thought of McCain's fathering of a black child out of wedlock. McCain later said of the incidents:[1]

"There were some pretty vile and hurtful things said during the South Carolina primary. It's a really nasty side of politics. We tried to ignore it and I think we shielded [our daughter] from it. It's just unfortunate that that sort of thing still exists. As you know she's Bengali, and very dark skinned. A lot of phone calls were made by people who said we should be very ashamed about her, about the color of her skin. Thousands and thousands of calls from people to voters saying, 'You know, the McCains have a black baby.' I believe that there is a special place in hell for people like those."

Wiki doesn't "report."

Saying this was orchestrated by Bush sounds like tabloid material.

yeah if it were "reported" in NewsMax or World Net Daily then it would be more credible.

That's also when McCain went all off tangent talking about the evil empire, LOL!

Poor guy's likely got severe PTSD. Definitely a great American but no one can go through what he did without being seriously effed up.

just wondering

what is your criteria for "great american"

we know you think McCain and Palin are both "great americns" and I don't know of anything they have in common and other than McCains service to his country during war I can't think of anything else that might qualify him as great

Well, we know this event happened.

I guess without a written confession from Rove, we can't blame bush.  maybe someone else did it.  Sure.

Or you can believe Bush ordered this campaign.  Even though you have no proof.  I suspect the most credible sources are liberal bloggers.

And of course, by most accounts, John McCain himself.

So?  He probably relied on tabloid reports too.  Still doesn't provide any credible evidence that Bush was behind it.

or MUCH more likely he and his staff received hundreds of first hand reports and maybe even heard recordings of the call

Or, more realistically, he had become familiar with the Bush campaigns filthy tactics up until that point.

Regardless, it was a real event and sources went far beyond "liberal bloggers".

What credible sources established that Bush was behind this?

I say McCain is a great American because he served, despite have the means to avoid doing so. He didn't go National Guard or have a security escort the entire tour either, LOL! Additionally, when shot down he managed to survive and despite being tortured didn't quit. He is someone that's earned respect hard way.

Being a great American doesn't mean the guy should have gotten a free pass at the White House, though. It does, however, mean the Bush cronies should have at least acted in a more honorable way but they did us all a favor by showing he can come unraveled when the right buttons are pushed. I really respected him more as a politician before he started playing the game and backed away from real campaign finance reform. He was probably the only politician I had any respect for until Bush got to him.

personally I don't think serving even though he could have gotten out of it qualifies as being great

surviving torture, not giving in, being an inspiration to other definitely qualifies him (IMO)

I still have no idea what Palin has done that would qualify her a "great american"
