Skyline ......  the soon to be released movie is supposed to answer all this stuff intelligently.

At least that's what the original script had in mind.

We'll soon see.

I think that the solution to ultra long distance space travel  will be found in the advanced study of Quantum Mechanics which should occur within the next 80 years or so.

Some ambitious folks have even been interested in making advanced travel arrangements for their yet to be born grandkids.
