It amazes me how these guys can display a ripped back with a christmas tree but no ripped glutes. Samir in '83 had a back that was as ripped as the current crop of pros, but he too had no ripped glutes. I guess that's the last place the body will burn fat.

They didn't have the right kind of "dope" back then...

ripped glutes don't come from a certain type of diet.

Some ' new ' pics

It is hard to decide whether Arnold won that contest based on his physique or due to the sheer strength of his charisma. He is a salesman at heart, and he was always outstanding when it comes to selling himself. Arnold was not at his best, but even not as his best he was still better than everybody else. Only at the 1998 Olympia Haney finally surpassed the Arnold of 1974 in muscularity. I think Arnold was good enough to win, but if he were unknown the judges would look at his huge pecs and biceps, and realize this is pretty much the only areas where Arnold was far above everyone else. There were guys with better backs, better abs, better quads, etc. Maybe having the biggest pecs and biceps wouldn't be enough for Arnold to win if he were unknown. So it is hard to tell if he really deserved to win.

Arnold's twisting shots helped him a lot... Those arms!

I wish somewhere... ANYWHERE... I could find/see footage of this exact moment. Odd that the 1980 Mr. Olympia DVD or The Comeback doesn't show it.

I just don't understand all the comparisons with Roger Walker.

I can see more BB's up there that look more deserving. I must be missing something.

Roger kind of reminds me of Teufel.

Arnolds four pack kills his lines. Zane looks the clear winner to me.

Walker was the home town boy .  contest was in Sydney Aus. and Walker lived there.  Vince Basille was front row taking photos.

Those pictures are kinda biased.

Standing relaxed Arnold got beat, but when he posed he was unbeatable.  Same thing with Dorian Yates.

Nice pics. I've seen every picture from that show- but there were many here I've never seen. Wait! That makes no sense.

Thanks OP.

Oh c'mon Arnie standing next to Mentzer made Mike look like a baby. Arnie was big, ripped and striated.

Mentzer had no chest, weak arms and delts in comparison.

Arnie had unbeatable calves just needed a bit more hamstrings and front quads.

And quads weren't exactly "in" 30+ years ago!

Coe & Dickerson look better than Arnold

Zane, due to the injury, disrupted training, over-dieted, and lost valuable muscle, otherwise best conditioning in show

The pics of Padilla are awesome, if the guy was 3 inches taller...

Mentzer, doesnt feature, he was a contender only in his mind

I'm curious Figo, do you think that Zane looked better circa '78 @ 187 or circa '82 @ 205? I say '78

Padilla looked awesome, bar height he brought the best package. Zane looked a bit flat but still had his lines and the best conditioning, I also agree about Coe and Dickerson.

Mentzer looked bad, also Arnold needed to come in heavier, the lighter he was the more his structural problems became apparent.

zane was a blend of flowing lines, perfect proportion and great conditioning, so a few pounds down or up made a a much more drastic difference than on someone like platz or franco

I think he looked his best at 190lb or under, I dont know what he weighed in 80, but it must've been closer to 180, looked flat like Jaime said, actually really small :-[

Dickerson was also either spot on, or not a contender (dickerson dominated almost all the early 80's shows he entered, except for francos gift in 81, and when bannout finally found diuretics in 83), but next to a bigger man, disappeared..

never saw the fuss in Dickerson, conditioned yes, great calves and back yes.
Terrible fdb basically missing a pair of bi's, droopy lopsided right pec, wasn't it torn?  and basically a funny shape overall

for the era, the most complete package, granted, a comparatively "weak" field
