Allen West on the Marines Incident: 'Shut Your Mouth, War Is Hell'

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), a former Army lieutenant colonel, sends THE WEEKLY STANDARD an email commenting on the Marines' video, and has given us permission to publish it.

“I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.

“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?

“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.

“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”

Rep. Allen West: I'd Step Up to Vice-Presidential Plate if Asked to Run
Monday, 16 Jan 2012

U.S. Rep. Allen West, who generally has deflected suggestions that he could be a vice-presidential candidate, now is saying he would “step up to the plate” if asked.

The freshman Florida Republican and tea party favorite took that swing at pitches from three constituents at a town hall meeting, according to The Palm Beach Post.

In answer to the voters’ written questions at the meeting, West said: "If people come to me and ask me to continue to serve my country in a higher capacity, I'm not going to say no. It would be an incredible privilege and honor. I doubt that I'm on anybody's list.

“Thank you for asking and if it came to fruition, yeah, I'd step up to the plate," West said, drawing applause, the Post reported.

West previously had answered the way he did at a recent Boca Raton homeowners meeting, the Post noted.

"If somebody were to ask, I've got to pray about it first. I've got to talk to Mrs. West and my two little girls about it, and then we'll make the best decision for our country and also for us as a family," West said.

He changed that up a bit last week when Boca Raton public relations agent Barry Epstein asked a about the possibility of West’s becoming a vice-presidential candidate on his Internet show, the Post reported.

"I've always said that that's something I'd have to pray about, I'd have to talk to my family about, make sure we make the right decision," West began. "But if someone asks you to step up and serve your country, I'm not going to turn my back on my country."

West added: "I'm not going to say no, but I doubt that I'm on anyone's list for consideration."

Palin: Allen West 'Top of my List' for Vice President
Wednesday, 04 Apr 2012
By Greg McDonald

Sarah Palin is pushing Florida Rep. Allen West as a possible Republican vice presidential candidate, calling him a “passionate and strong” public servant who “wants to put government back on the side of the people.”

“Top of my list is Allen West,” the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate told Fox New’s Sean Hannity Tuesday night.

According to Politico, Palin told Hannity the eventual GOP presidential nominee should “go rogue” and pick a running mate not considered “necessarily safe,” just as Arizona Sen. John McCain surprised the country by picking her in his 2008 campaign against Barack Obama.

Editor's Note: Do You Like Romney, Santorum, Gingrich or Paul?  Vote Now in This Urgent Poll.

“I love that he has that military experience,” Palin said of West, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who was the first black elected to Congress from Florida since 1876. “He is a public servant willing to serve for the right reasons. He understands the Constitution. He understands our national foreign policy issues that must be addressed. He has served. I really like him.”

Palin, however, also acknowledged there was a “long list” of possible other candidates, including another lawmaker from Florida — Sen. Mark Rubio, who endorsed Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination last week.

“He’s great too. He is another one,” she said.

Palin, recalling her own run as a vice presidential candidate, said whoever the Republican nominee chooses is “going to get clobbered” by media scrutiny.

West, she said, could stand up to the challenge.

Look at the board retard claiming that West would be worse than Palin. Allen is head and shoulders above anything that the DNC can come up with, including the garbage sitting in the oval office at this very moment.

Only a whiny liberal/democrat would be bothered by him.

West is so great that he had to flee his district for another one just to keep his hide intact this election.

Sounds like a real stand up fighting guy there.

If you are implying he is some sort of coward, then you obviously don't know anything about what redistricting did to District 22. It has nothing to do with fighting, it has to do with realizing that the district is now leaning a lot more to the Democratic party. What he did was very intelligent. He is being a realist, something that can never be expected from any liberal democrat.

He fled his own district.

Spin that however you wish.  But it changes nothing.  So try to get those two brain cells to rub themselves together a bit harder and come up with something else.

Allen West: I’m Open to VP Slot
Friday, 06 Apr 2012
By Andra Varin

Rep. Allen West said Friday he would almost certainly “step up to the plate” if asked to be the Republican vice-presidential nominee.

Both 2008 GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley suggested this week that the Florida congressman would be a good No. 2 on the ticket.

“It’s very humbling,” West said, when asked about the possibility on CNN.

“If someone were to make that call to me, which I really doubt,” West said he would have to first think seriously about it and talk with his wife and daughters, but likely say yes.

West pointed out that his family members have a long and proud tradition of serving their country. His father fought in World War II. He himself spent 22 years in the Army, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and his nephew is now in the Army.

“We have always stepped up to the plate to serve our country,” he said. “We will continue to serve in any capacity, in any way we can.”

Asked whether he would be able to work with Mitt Romney, the front-runner in the GOP presidential race, West told CNN he was confident they could work out any differences.

“We would be able to come together as a team and turn this ship of state around for the United States of America,” he said.

West: Syrian Intervention Could Trigger World War III
Saturday, 02 Jun 2012
By Paul Scicchitano and Kathleen Walter

Amid pressure for the United States and other western countries to intervene in Syria’s bloody 14-month uprising, Florida Congressman and retired U.S. Army officer Allen West warns in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV that the troubled nation represents a smoldering powder keg that could trigger World War III.

International outrage over Syria has continued to mount since forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were blamed for last week’s massacre in the town of Houla, which resulted in the deaths of 108 people, including many women, children, and families — most of whom had been shot at close range.

West said that Assad’s father, Hafez, who ruled the country for decades before his son took power in 2000 upon his death, had been blamed for a similar massacre in another Syrian town.

“That’s how they do business, and so if we’re going to go in there, we need to go in with very clear rules of engagement if we’re going to get Bashar al-Assad out of there,” warned West, who had been posted in several combat zones.

“But understand, you’ll be starting World War III.”

While diplomatic sanctions do not appear to be effective, there is also not a clear alternative to Assad’s government. The Syrian freedom fighters are widely considered by Middle East experts to be fractured and disorganized.

“On one side you have the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Russia and also Bashar al-Assad,” West explained. “On the other side, you have freedom fighters. You have al-Qaida and radical Islamists. And also you have the backing of the state of Turkey.”

He pointed to recent experiences with Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood, is now threatening to bring Sharia law to the country, and Libya, which has been plunged into chaos since the death of dictator Moammar Gadhafi late last year.

“If you start to interject yourself in a means other than diplomatic who’s side are you on? We don’t need to put our military in a situation where they’re caught in a cross-fire,” insisted West.

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney favors arming the rebel forces while Arizona Sen. John McCain, the party’s 2008 nominee, would like the U.S. to conduct air strikes against Assad’s forces.

“I think that we should be listening to our greatest ally in the Middle East — Israel — as far as what are their concerns, and what would they like to see happen because they share that border with Syria,” said West.

While he does not favor military intervention in Syria — at least not for the time being — West said that time may be running out to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons in the region’s other hot spot.

“The longer we allow them to have time, it works on their side, not ours,” he explained. “They continue to go forward with their nuclear program. They continue to harden the facilities, which . . . can protect their nuclear program.”

The Congressman, who was elected in 2010, and is a member of the House Tea Party Caucus, said that the U.S. will be forced to act at some point to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

He criticizes President Obama’s handling of the Middle East.

“I know that he is very good with his little own personal target list, which reminds me of Lyndon Johnson approving bombing targets during the Vietnam War,” charged West. “That is not the business of the president. He is supposed to be more strategically minded.”

Rep. West: Obama Ranks Political Pressure Above Military Families
Saturday, 02 Jun 2012
By Paul Scicchitano and Kathleen Walter

Florida Congressman and retired U.S. Army officer Allen West  has accused President Barack Obama of placing political considerations above the needs of military families, veterans and America’s active-duty warriors in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV.

“He can come out and give all of the speeches that he wants, but just yesterday he threatened a veto of the military construction and VA benefits bill if it did not have anything about project labor agreements, which would favor unions,” declared the retired lieutenant colonel on Friday.

The congressman charged that President Obama is “putting political issues above taking care of our military, their families and also our veterans.”

His assessment is consistent with a Gallup poll released this week, which finds that veterans overwhelmingly favor GOP nominee Mitt Romney over the president by a margin of 58 percent to 38.

West claims that healthcare fees for the military and their families as well as America’s veterans would have tripled under Obama’s proposed budget.

“We know that there are a lot of cuts to the military that he is not standing up to try to stave off. For the United States and our veteran community, they understand who is standing up for them. And it’s definitely not the president,” said West.

West has been critical of the between $500-600 million in automatic defense spending cuts that are expected to kick in early next year.

Such cuts would result in the smallest ground force that the United States has had since 1940, the smallest Navy since 1915, and the smallest Air Force since the advent of the modern Air Force, according to West.

“That is why we shouldn’t have people talking about military operations until we solve this thing about sequestration and we find the requisite amount of spending cuts up here in Washington, D.C. to make sure that we don’t have our military — which is only about 19.6 percent of our total budget — consuming about 50 to 55 percent of budget cuts,” he added.

West announces $2.2M second-quarter fundraising haul
By Justin Sink - 07/13/12

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), among the most visible and vocal members of 2010's Tea Party freshman class, announced that he raised $2.2 million in second-quarter fundraising.

West has now raised just under $10 million for the cycle — a huge number for a House candidate — and entered July with $3.7 million cash on hand.

"I am once again honored and humbled to have so many Floridians and Americans standing with me and putting their hard-earned dollars behind our campaign — $10, $15 and $20 at a time," West said in a statement. "The overwhelming grassroots financial support from the people of Florida's 18th congressional district and Americans across our great nation is a testament to their commitment to ending the irresponsible and dangerous policies threatening the American Dream."

West will be able to use the money, as redistricting forced the Florida lawmaker into a new, Democratic-leaning district. Challenger Patrick Murphy has remained within striking distance in recent polls, although West is still favored to retain a seat in Congress.

West's huge fundraising haul — which rivals or bests well-funded Senate candidates, in some instances — is likely the byproduct of his national following. A regular on the talk-show circuit, West regularly makes headlines and generates controversy.

Just this week, West raised eyebrows when he compared Social Security's disability insurance to a form of "21st-century slavery." West has used slavery rhetoric repeatedly to describe government programs; in June, he accused President Obama of wanting American voters “to be his slave and be economically dependent on him.”

That fiery rhetoric has made him a popular figure in Tea Party circles. At an event Monday in Colorado, a supporter at a town hall meeting told Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney that West would "be a great vice president. He's a fighter, and that's what we want."

“All suggestions are welcome," Romney replied.
