I don't presume to know anything more than charlie is a man who lives his life how he chooses, and doesn't not apologize when his behavior comes under scrutiny because other people don't approve. 
I personally don't think charlie initially wanted this attention at all.  But the media makes a living out of exposing personal lives of famous people, so that when his party lifestyle came under the spotlight, the pussified expected response would be for him to say 'i have a problem' and go off to rehab, but he did not want to do that, because from his perspective he was a perfectly functioning person.  He was able to conduct his profession flawlessly, and his personal life is really no ones business.
It was at that point that he began to be outspoken through various different outlets.  Did you hear his interview on howard stern?  He sounded pretty fucking logical to me, coherent and made good sense with his vantage point.
