Pec tear
« on: March 23, 2011, 03:42:25 PM »
So I was benching today. The bar came down to my chest. It was about an inch from my chest and i felt this odd sensation like buttons running down the inside of my right pec were popping open and the feeling of a towel ripping.
I had the bar taken off me and it immediately felt like i had been punched in the shest.
Its a few hours later now.  No bruising, but serious pain.  My trap and delt have locked up to support the pec.  I cant feel or see any tear thoughbut something feels odd.
Have i torn it?

Yep.

You need an MRI to determine if the pec is torn off the tendon, even partially. This will help you determine whether you should get surgery. If it's covered or you can afford it, do it. Look into someone who has done this type of surgery before do see if they can cosmetically fix any damage.

Don't get an X-Ray, it's useless.

Get the surgery about 10 days from now if you need it.

there is not always bruising with tears. but you should see a difference in shape of the pec. try flex it and feel?

either way if it is a tear get surgery as soon as possible.

You won't be able to see or feel tears until the swelling goes down. (Trust me I've torn pec, lat, quad and ham).

Not at all. Actually it's because I'm a midget with 40 extra lbs on my smallish frame, and I take too many drugs. Ok with you, "Nails"?

This is true. If you feel around on both sides you may be able to tell if a tendon is missing by comparing both sides. If you have insurance make sure to tell the Dr that you are having a hard time moving your arm and are afraid of permanent loss of motion. Don't act like you want this done because you want to be able to bench what you did before. This is not a good reason and the DR might just say he doesn't recommend surgery and you should just do rehab. Also remember that after 10 days the tendon will adhere back to the bone where it is laying, this will make surgery a little more complicated.

Nails, a friend of mind just had that open heart surgery.

I got to watch it through an operating room window, but left when they started closing him up.

(I have a friend who does the heart massage thing.)

x2....I had no bruising or anything either.  All tendons intact....right through belly of muscle.  All I was told was that it was a 'slight strain'.....

it might not be as bad as it seems.  A few years ago I thought I tore a pec.  Had extreme sharp pain, then discomfort even from breathing.  It was also closer to the sternum.  It was injured for a while but healed on its own with no residual loss of strength or muscle deformity so I assume it was not actually torn.  AFAIK pec tears usually are from the outside so you may also not have a pec tear.  Don't want to give you false hope, just telling you that it might not be the end of the world so postpone any plans of offing yourself :)
