Russia didn't exist as an independent country back then - it was USSR, union of many now independent countries.
Also you're talking about alliances here, I see. Soviet counterpart to NATO was Warsaw pact which consisted of 8 countries, USSR being one of those.

USSR vs USA. No other country could have nothing to neither of those. No other. Other countries were just 'bumper' and in assisting role. Everybody knows this. Both could have wiped any other country off from Earth if wanted.
