Pantera is pop. Hypocrisy from Sweden is metal.

Sweden currently produces the best metal in the world and has done so for the last 15 years. Anyone who listens to metal knows this.  ;D

For a person who is trying to impress with his metal cred, your comment that Pantera is "pop" is ridiculous. I own every Hypocrisy CD (and DVD) and in no way think its music is any more "metal" than Pantera's. In fact, I'd suggest Pantera is the overall more aggressive outfit.

As well, although I am a HUGE fan of Swedish metal (so many CDs in my collection from Swedish groups), to suggest it's at the cutting edge, still, in 2011, is off base, bro. Still terrific bands and talent from that country, but it isn't what it was as a forward-moving musical force that it was in the later '90s/early '00s.

Can't quote you properly on my phone Fortress but I agree with you except for the Pantera thing. Pantera is just blues rock with a much heavier feel. Gothenberg isn't what it used to be. Still, IMO better than most other metal out there. Don't like the latest offerings from north American or England these days.  I'm generalizing of course as there's great metal music from all around the world.

Mid 80's - 1992 were amazing years.

I feel bad for young people who dont realize how much fun we had back then.

I agree except I'd include the early 80's too.

Priest
Maiden
Ozzy
Accept
Queensryche
Dio and Sabbath with Dio

etc...

All produced their defining material save for Sab. Good time for classic metal.

AGREED.

However, the fun really did not start until about 84-85 and then it was awesome.   Great time to grow up and be a teen.

Yeah thrash started to hit around the mid 80's with the recognition of the big 4. Don't think we called it Thrash back then though, that term may have come later. Great decade for metal regardless.

Saw Venom and Slayer in a small club in 84. The Slayer guys were walking down the street handing out posters for their gig.

Saw Metallica and Metal Church in a small venue in 86 on their first headlining tour. Metallica in spandex hahaha!

Pantera is just blues rock with a much heavier feel.

Where to even start ... With all due respect, oh, man.  ::)

So Pantera is a blues rock band, is it?

I suppose about half of all trad metal groups are really just blues rock, too, then, eh?

This is where I get off the train. Further discussion is pointless.

P.S. That "Mouth For War" tune, what a wonderful tribute to the blues stylings of SRV. It has so little in common with extreme heavy metal, after all. And "Fucking Hostile" is essentially a blues jam. "Strength Beyond Strength"? Total blues, just played in a heavy way.

Yep.

Darrell plays pentatonics and not much else. Throw in the odd tri-tone for a bit of added heaviness in the rhythm. I'm simplifying his style, but that's the gist of his playing and songwriting. You're not a musician, are you?
